An exceptional and exceptionally large "large paper" copy. This copy is complete with the engraved frontispiece the extra plate depicting Vergil reading the Aeneid to Augustus and all 101 of the magnificent engraved plates by W. Hollar called for in this edition: ten in the Bucolics twenty in the Georgics and seventy-one in the Aeneid. Bound in 17th-century paneled calf very nicely rebacked in the 18th-century. The spine is separated into eight compartments ruled and tooled in gold by raised bands. There are two spine labels one in red and one in green morocco tooled in gold. The boards are framed by a single gold fillet.Internally this copy is in superb condition with very little of the browning associated with this edition. The great majority of leaves are crisp lily-white and wide margined. In fact this is the largest and cleanest copy that we have had the pleasure to handle. There are a few incidental marginal tears only one of which –now mended- enters an engraving opposite p. 261. The final leaf is ink-stained. "Dryden's 'translation of Vergil'" says Pope whose own translation of Homer was inspired by Dryden's work "is the most noble and spirited translation I know in any language." Thomas "The book was published by subscription a system of joint-stock patronage now coming into vogue. . Dryden's correspondence with his publisher Tonson showed a good many bickerings during the publication. One cause of quarrel was Tonson's desire that the book should be dedicated to William III. Dryden honourably refused; but Tonson had the engravings adapted for the purpose by giving to Aeneas the hooked nose of William Dryden Letter to his son 3 Sept. 1697." DNB"Shakespeare probably knew at least the earlier books of the 'Aeneid' in Latin while Milton's 'Paradise Lost' attempts to provide an English equivalent not only for Vergil's epic themes but even for his syntax diction and as far as possible meter. But in Britain he was also particularly well-served by translations. In the seventeenth-century the epic was translated by Dryden." "Virgil is the only complete representative of the deepest sentiment and the highest mood of his countrymen and of his time. In his pastoral and didactic poems he gives a living voice to the whole charm of Italy in the Aeneid to the whole glory of Rome. He was in the maturity of his powers at the most critical epoch of the national life one of the most critical epochs in the history of the world. Keeping aloof from the trivial daily life of his contemporaries he was moved more profoundly than any of them by the deeper currents of emotion in the sphere of government religion morals and human feeling which were then changing the world; and in uttering the enthusiasm of the hour and all the new sensibilities that were stirring in his own heart and imagination he had in the words of Sainte-Beuve 'divined at a decisive hour of the world what the future would love.' He was also by universal acknowledgement the greatest literary artist whom Rome produced. Š Virgil's fame as a poet rests on the three acknowledged works of his early and mature manhood-the pastoral poems or Eclogues the Georgics and the Aeneid-all written in that hexameter verse which Tennyson has called 'The stateliest measure ever molded by the lips of man.'" EB vol. 28 page 112-113 Wing V-616

The works of Virgil is the first addition with 102 excluding the plate of Virgil in the Senate stunning illustrated plates each dedicated to a subscriber and produced by the finest European engravers – Michael van der Gucht Wenceslaus Hollar and Pierre Lombart.

Dryden and Tonson the printer had a long and profitable relationship. Dryden indeed was one of the first authors to draw a 'significant advance' for his works from Tonson which caused many bitter arguments but in the end Tonson and Dryden were a powerful team publishing many works previously only found in Greek and Latin editions. Dryden besides being a popular playwright in his time made these works popular amongst the rising middle class who without classical training in Greek or Latin were omitted from reading the works of Virgil and others that Dryden seemed to crank out in record time for Tonson's presses. A rare and evocative poem.
Jacob Tonson

1697033272
London : Jacob Tonson 1697 A good copy of the large paper 1st edition with 103 full page engravings. This is the first illustrated edition of Dryden's famous translations of Virgil's works completed in 1696. The illustrations are spectacular - each dedicated to a subscriber who donated 5 guineas for the privilege. This copy has 2 bookplates on the front pastedown endpaper. The oldest is of William Trumbull Esq 1708-1760 who was the son of Sir William Trumbull and inherited his estate. Sir William 1639-1716 was a Privy Counsellor and friend of John Dryden. This is certainly Sir William's subscription copy for which he paid 5 guineas and has the plate opposite page 125 in the Georgics section dedicated to him. He was particularly fond of the Aeneid and Dryden notes on the second page of his Postscript to the Reader that 'If the last Aeneid shine amongst its fellows 'tis owing to the Commands of Sir William Trumbull one of the Principal Secretaries of State who recommended it as his favourite to my Care: and for his sake particularly I have made it mine.' It likely stayed within the estate which became the Marquess of Downshire Estate until purchase for the Fox Pointe Library - their bookplate is the second of the two. The panelled calf boards are contemporary and in good condition with later reinforcement and some wear to corners. The spine with raised bands and title label is later but is degrading at the ends and there is splitting at the joints the boards are attached. Page edges are reddened. Contents: 3 initial blanks; frontispiece by M Vander Gucht a Flemish engraver working in England; rubricated title page; dedication to the Right Hon Lord Clifford 4pp; Life of Vergil 16pp; plate; Preface to the Pastorals 12pp; Poems to Dryden 5pp; Lists of Subscribers which also provide a plate index 4pp; Pastorals p 1-48 with 10 plates; Dedication to Earl of Chesterfield 5pp; Essay on the Georgics 6pp; Georgics pp 49-147 with 20 plates; Dedication 45pp; Aeneis pp 201-619 with 71 plates; Postscript to the Reader p621-623; Notes and Observations p625-640; Finis; 3 final blanks. The contents are very clean. The majority of the text and plates are on very good quality paper which has stayed white however some sections of text and some plates circa 18 are brown toned. There are a couple of paper flaws - eg side margin to plate 1 of Pastorals; side edge plate at p 63; a couple of tears - first page of subscribers has lost the bottom corner; small tear in the gutter of plate at p 20; small edge tear plate at p 61; and a printing fault at the top of the plate at p 56. Board size: 45 x 28.8 cm. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
Jacob Tonson hardcover

Also present are the Prologue and the Epilogue. The earliest copies lack these leaves but an unsigned leaf was inserted after A4 headed "Prologue to the OPERA Spoken by Mr. Betterton." H2 was cancelled and a new leaf headed H2v: The EPILOGUE. Spoken by Mrs. Bracegirdle the word FINIS being transferred from H2 to H2v. The text block shows some aging and light staining; it is finely bound in full crushed crimson morocco unsigned but reminiscent of Sangorski: Spine in six compartments with raised bands intricately tooled in gilt; gilt rules on the boards; gilt inner dentelles; endpapers of crimson Victorian cloth in a linen effect. Top edge gilt. The text has been bulked out with several pages of blank paper in the rear. A nice copy of the scarce first edition in a fine binding. Dryden's 'King Arthur' owes little to the Arthur of history of romance. The play centers around a battle with Oswald a Saxon leader which Arthur wins. He also wing the faire but blind Emmeline whose sight is restored by Merlin. The play was first performed at the Queen's Theatre with music by Purcell and marks the likely beginning of a rekindling of interest in King Arthur and other things monarchial after their suppression by Cromwell and the Commonwealth. Born in Cisalpine Gaul Virgil Publius Vergillius Maro 70-19 BCE published his first collection of poems Eclogues around 38 BCE and the Georgics in 29 BCE. First editions with these Bartolozzi engravings the only two works illustrated by Lady Diana Beauclerc here together in handsome contemporary full morocco. Dryden's adaptations of Chaucer and Boccaccio were among the chief reasons for his perhaps surprisingly high place in the esteem of the Romantic poets especially Coleridge Keats Byron and Scott while Bürger's Leonora inspired a frenzy of competing English versions around this time. Ironically Bürger had found his ballad form not in German literature but largely through the medium of Percy's Reliques; from Leonora it was reabsorbed into English through the Lyrical Ballads most directly Wordsworth's "The Idiot Boy". Two works bound in a single vol. folio 365 x 255 mm. Fables: 9 engraved plates 15 engraved vignettes; Leonora: engraved frontispiece 4 engraved plates 4 engraved vignettes most signed by Bartolozzi after Beauclerc. A VERY FINE COPY clean bright and free of the splaying that very frequently afflicts the boards of this work.

This is a most appealing example of the luxurious hand-crafted volumes produced under the auspices of the Essex House Press with our copy coming from the library of a noted Dryden collector. The book is the 11th from the Essex House series of 14 "Great Poems in the English Language" a group of lovely little works all printed on vellum and with delightful colored illustrations and historiated initials. Generally considered to be the best example in English of the choric hymn the present work is set at a feast given by Alexander the Great who finds himself entranced by the poet and lyrist Timotheus. The great leader is lost in reveries of exploits and victory he sighs and cries over battles lost and warriors slain and he finds inspiration for new conquests. Our printer C. R. Ashbee founded the Essex House Press in 1898 by purchasing the presses and other production equipment though not the type formerly owned by the Kelmscott Press which had shut down at the death of William Morris. Ashbee printed books for 12 years with vellum ink and paper identical to that used by Kelmscott in an effort to carry on the tradition Morris had established. But the Essex House Press because it was conceived of and continued as part of a larger enterprise involving various artisans at work in a group of workshops at Ashbee's Guild of Handicrafts located at Essex House in London's Mile End Road always had its own special identity a fact which Cave reflects when he calls it the "Arts and Crafts press 'par excellence.'" The illustrator here Reginald Savage fl. 1886-1904 is deemed by Houfe "a talented and imaginative designer and woodcut artist" and Houfe notes that he was also commended by his fellow illustrator Walter Crane 1845-1915 for his "weird designs." Former owner William Andrews Clark Jr. 1877-1934 put together one of the most distinguished collections of English and French literature of his day. He had strong holdings in many areas but especially in Shakespeare and the other Elizabethans in Dryden in Oscar Wilde and in the French drama. After a fire in his home in 1923 Clark constructed a separate fireproof building to house his collection; in 1926 this library building with its distinguished collection was deeded to the University of California and now serves as a prominent center for literary research.
