An excellent third edition of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy's The Art of Painting translated by John Dryden ESTC: T1222964. First published in 1695 by W. Rogers in Fleetstreet London. Originally published after de Fresnoy's death in 1668 in Paris by C. Barbin under the title De arte graphica USTC 6133804.Bound in contemporary calf boards rebacked. Illustrated with an engraved frontis and woodcut initials head pieces and additional printer's ornaments. Includes both English and Latin printed annotations in the margins. Signatures run as follows: A8 a-d8 e4 B-Cc8 Dd2. England's first Poet Laureate John Dryden provides a lengthy preface on the parallels between poetry and painting. The work itself is a prose version of du Fresnoy's original poem on his observations on the art of painting written in Latin and edited by du Fresnoy throughout the 1650s.This edition contains supplementary prefatory material published in the 1716 second edition including a dedicatory poem 'To Mr Jervas with Fresnoy's Art of Painting' by Alexander Pope. Charles Jervas is considered to have edited the later editions.The third edition Richard Graham's A Short Account of the most Eminent Painters is included at the rear with a separate title page but continuous pagination. With rebinding this copy would make a superb candidate for collectors of works on historic art theory. Bound in contemporary calf boards rebacked with a reinforced spine. Externally sound. With prominent marks to boards and rubbing to extremities. Evidence of archival repair to the front board. Spine repair significantly cracked with heavily chipped spine label. Additional loss of leather to the head and tail of spine. Offsetting to end paper. A previous owner's ink inscription to the rear free end paper. Hinge notably strained and spine exposed at front board. Signatures K2-M and M2-M7 are held in by a single thread. Scattered spotting throughout occasionally heavier though text remains readable. The second enlarged edition of John Dryden's English language translation of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy's Latin poem about the art of painting termed a critical treatise on the practice of the art including general advice to students.Rebound in half morocco and illustrated with an engraved frontispiece.This second edition is believed to have been edited by painter Charles Jervas with the assistance of Alexander Pope and includes a dedicatory verse poem to Jervas from Pope 'To Mr. Jervas with Frensoy"s Art of painting'. Pope greatly admired Dryden's translation of the work as did Dr. Samuel Johnson who borrowed hundreds of quotations from it for his Dictionary.Richard Graham's biographical chronology of renowned painters "A Short Account of the Most Eminent Painters' appears to the rear with a separate title page as called for.ESTC reference no. The text block remains strong overall showing only the scattered faint dust-dulling foxing and offsetting expected of age. A well-preserved example overall.
