Each of the three volumes has two additional title pages one engraved and one letterpress. Without date of publication but plates are dated 1798. Embellished with superb engravings including decorative headpieces and tailpieces. The boards are lightly rubbed at the corners internally also in very good condition. 145 x 95 mm 5¾ x 3¾ inches. All pages marbled edges. Elaborate Gilt to boards. 5 raised bands red & green spinal labels with gilt titles. Marbled endpapers. Volumes show modest shelf and edge wear with all board edged gilt 90% complete. All boards firmly attached though there are splits to leather finish of each volume several volumes show partial full splits of leather hinges to about midway down the spine but none are fully split. The gloss finish worn at the hinges front and rear. Volume one has a half inch by quarter inch chip out of the head of the spine and slight wrap to front board. Small splits and chips to voumes II and III and V and some gilt worn off on spine tail. A beautiful set. . William Pickering hardcover

He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. . Lightly worn at edges and spine with each volume having the 18th century bookplate of A Walker Newry at front. Small chip and start of plit in letaher at top of front hinge and light toning to preliminaries; some offsetting from engraved title to previous blank fly leaf slightly rough eadges to engraved title of Vol III. Beautifully figured tree calf. These three volumes represent the poetical works of John Dryden 1631-1700 and are numbered 40 41 and 42 on the spine gilt worn. Dryden was a poet and dramatist who dominated literary life in the latter half of the 17th century becoming Poet Laureate in 1670. A most attractive little set. Bells Poets published in the 18th century consisted of the works of some 48 poets and totalled over one hundred volumes. Second Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
