Armorial bookplate of Admiral Duff dated 1858 to FEP inked gift inscription to head of title page: 'Archd. Duff from C. Dyne'. A mid-eighteenth-century edition of a complete translation of Juvenal's satires by various hands and a complete translation of Persius done by poet John Dryden 1631-1700 alone. Dryden was additionally responsible for the translation of satires I III VI X and XVI of Juvenal selecting his fellow translators for the remainder including Nahum Tate William Congreve and his sons Charles and John. Dryden moreover provided a substantial preface the 'Discourse concerning the original and progress of satire' in which he presented a history of the genre a critique of its principal Latin practitioners and reflections on its modern use. The work was first published in 1693. Archibald Duff seventh of Drummuir 1773-1858 Royal Navy officer. Vice-Admiral Duff led a distinguished career in the Royal Navy serving with Nelson in the Napoleonic Wars and receiving both the Turkish gold medal for his role in the Egyptian campaign and the gold medal of the Royal Humane Society for his 'intrepid and manly exertions' in jumping overboard at night to save another man. The fifth edition of this John Dryden translation.ESTC citation number T123528.Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-one plates.Collated bound without three plates.The collected satires of Juvenal and Persius. Both of the Roman poets are well remembered for their satirical poems though their works differed in style greatly. This volume includes sixteen of Juvenal's satires and six of Persius'.Juvenal's satires which are included in this volume are extracted from his collection title 'Satires' written between the end of the first and early second centuries A.D.Translated by John Dryden and others. In a full calf binding. Externally worn with rubbing to the board and spine. Loss of leather to the tail of the spine with a small amount of loss to the head. Crack to the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities with the leather lifting a little in places. Small crack to the rear joint and to the head of the front joint. Front hinge is starting but firm rear hinge is strained. Lacking most of the paper to the paste downs. Lacking the front endpaper. Rear endpaper is detaching. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally binding is strained in places. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with the occasional spot and ink mark to the margins. Title page is a little edgeworn. Frontispiece is edge worn and detaching. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page. Pages 175 to 186 are detaching. Plate facing page 13 is detaching. Lacking three plates. Good Only J. Tomson hardcover
