The first limited edition of Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides housed in the original slipcase with map plates and text from Boswell"s original notes. In the original publisher' quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards housed in the original slipcase. This is a limited edition of this work being copy number six hundred and fourteen of seven hundred and ninety copies. Illustrated with one folding map and four plates. Collated complete.First published posthumously in 1785 this first limited 1936 edition rejuvenated interest by presenting a text derived directly from Boswell"s notes. In 1773 Boswell persuaded his friend Samuel Johnson already famed for his Dictionary to travel with him through the Highlands and Hebrides of Scotland visiting places such as St Andrews Aberdeen Inverness and the isles of Skye Coll and Mull. This work was penned from the diary that Boswell kept during the tour and was published after Johnson's death in 1784.Boswell and Johnson met in 1763 when Johnson was fifty-four and they became fast friends. Their friendship resulted in the influential biography 'The Life of Samuel Johnson'.This limited edition was edited with a preface and notes by Frederick A. Pottle and Charles H. Bennet. In the original publisher' quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally very smart. Spine slightly faded. One or two very slight handling marks to boards. The odd spot to endpapers.
