A beautifully illustrated collection of erotic songs First editions of two licentious songbooks bound together as usual here featuring a red and green streaked design on the covers. Lalleman and Sedaine's lyrics combine devilries fantasy and eroticism and are brought to life by detailed and animated engravings. Lalleman and Sedaine's text was published during a "moment in French literary history when erotic freedom paired with intellectual liberty" Ganofsky p. 231. As libertine writers their contemporaries included the Marquis de Sade and Choderlos de Laclos. Like many erotic texts of the time Le Pot Pourri de Loth and Le Tentations de Saint Antoine are subversions of Christian tales. This appropriation of sacred stories may appear merely to be intended to shock and titillate. However in a typically libertine manner the authors had a secondary aim to demonstrate "a certain audacity and independence with respect to what is traditionally and institutionally held as sacred" and thereby to "highlight that libertinism stems from intellectual emancipation" Ganofsky p. 231. 2 works bound in 1 187 x 124 mm. With 18 engraved plates by Elluin after Borel not signed 20 pp. of music. In a full calf binding with gilt detailing to back strop. Significant rubbing to board perimeters. Loss of leather to back strip head with further small loss to head of rear board. Joints starting with front board a touch tender and rear board firmly held. Lacking front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Handling marks to title page. La pièce "Les Deux Petits Savoyards" est une comédie en un acte et en prose accompagnée d'ariettes petits airs chantés ce qui en fait une comédie mêlée de musique. La pièce connut un certain succès lors de sa première représentation en 1789 une année marquée par l'agitation sociale qui allait conduire à la Révolution française. Ce type de comédie musicale qui mettait en scène des personnages du peuple résonnait particulièrement dans un contexte de montée des tensions sociales. Michel-Jean Sedaine aussi connu sous le pseudonyme "M. Marsollier des Vivetières" était un auteur prolifique du XVIIIe siècle célèbre pour ses livrets d'opéras-comiques et ses comédies. Il a travaillé avec de nombreux compositeurs et ses textes se distinguent souvent par un ton léger et sentimental. Dalayrac était un compositeur populaire de l'opéra-comique avec une production importante et variée. Il a collaboré avec Marsollier sur plusieurs uvres et "Les Deux Petits Savoyards" est l'une de leurs collaborations les plus connues.
