19667071Paris London Maryknoll NY: Gallimard Fayard Ark Routledge Orbis Weidenfeld & Nicolson 1966. A large collection of works by and concerning Simone Weil French philosopher political activist and Christian mystic. There are 16 paperback editions of Weil's works in both French and English along with an anthology from the Penguin Modern Classics series and Writings selected by Eric O Springsted Orbis Books Maryknoll NY. There are 6 hardback biographies of Weil including a near fine first edition by Francine Du Plessix Gray Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2001 and A Sketch for a Portrait by Richard Rees Oxford University Press 1966; the others are by Jacques Cabaud such as A Fellowship in Love Harvill London 1964 and Simone Weil a New York at a Londres Plon 1967. The biographical volumes in paperback include Le tourment de Simone Weil by Francois d'Hauteville Utopian Pessimist by David McLellan and La Métaphysique Religieuse de Simone Weil by Miklos Veto. At least four of the books belonged to British theologian and religious broadcaster Vernon Sproxton who in 1962 wrote and produced an edition of Viewpoint for the BBC on the life and work of Weil. Sproxton's copy of Waiting on God borrowed from the BBC Library is here along with 'Simone Weil biografia di un pensiero' by Gabriella Fiori which is inscribed "To Vernon Sproxton with a lively souvenir of our meeting through the great Simone". The books are generally in very good condition. The ownership inscription of British academic V Blackburn appears in several titles along with her annotations. Extra shipping charges will apply to this comprehensive resource for students of "the life and thought of a Frenchwoman who has been described variously as prophet psychopath religious masochist saint. 199851795New York: The New Press 1998. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff glossy pictorial wrappers. 572pp. Fine. Pristine "Uncorrected Proof" of this first-ever gathering of the French writer's 300 love letters in English to the American novelist following their 1947 first meeting. Interestingly the published trade edition bears 559 pages -- which suggests that either typesetting changes reduced the number of pages OR that some content present in this uncorrected proof was omitted from the regular edition. Scarce as such. The New Press paperback
