Signed first editions of this classic work are rare and none have appeared at auction in the last sixty years. In 1946 Simone de Beauvoir began to outline what she thought would be an autobiographical essay explaining why when she had tried to define herself the first sentence that came to mind was "I am a woman." That October my maiden aunt Beauvoir's contemporary came to visit me in the hospital nursery. I was a day old and she found a little tag on my bassinet that announced "It's a Girl!" In the next bassinet was another newborn "a lot punier" she recalled whose little tag announced "I'm a Boy!" There we lay innocent of a distinction-- between a female object and a male subject-- that would shape our destinies. It would also shape Beauvoir's great treatise on the subject. The Second Sex deals with the treatment of women throughout history and is regarded as a major work of feminist philosophy and the starting point of second-wave feminism. Literary scholar Camille Paglia praised The Second Sex calling it "brilliant" and "the supreme work of modern feminism." Named by Modern Library as one of top 100 books of non- fiction of the twentieth century. Also named by The Times Literary Supplement as one of the most hundred influential books since World War II. 1953365<p><strong>The very scarce uncorrected proof copy of the first English edition of this foundational text of contemporary feminism despite its being unsatisfactorily translated by H.M. Parshley and not given another translation for more than 50 years. The wife of Alfred Knopf Beauvoir s American publisher heard of the book while in Paris and asked Parshley a retired zoology professor for a book report which led to his translation which Alfred Knopf asked him to condense prior to publication. This Cape edition came out the same year. Despite its labored English-language birth the translation popularized the idea that in a patriarchal society women are perceived as "other" and that gender is a societal construct; and it inspired Betty Friedan author of The Feminine Mystique and at least one generation of women. Spine-cocked with binder's glue bleeding through; small edge tears at the extremities; a very good copy. Scarce fragile and a key volume in the history of gender relations. Henderson was a founding editor of the Reader's Digest Book Club and was married to Ralph Ernest Henderson who was the creator and first editor in chief of The Reader's Digest Condensed Books. <br /> The book was possibly being considered for the book club or the condensed books as there is also a laid in note addressed to Ralph from someone named Harry possibly another editor with the initials "REH" at the top that reads: "Ralph: Goodness! I'm afraid I was misled by the ads. At any rate there is more in here about women than I think I want to contemplate on vacation. Thanks just the same. Harry. 2/3."<br /> The author's controversial book which was banned by the Vatican was considered a groundbreaking work of feminist philosophy and laid the groundwork for the second wave of feminism.
