Containing all his best-known poetry including The Faerie Queen April and Astrophel. Spenser's masterpiece is an extensive poem The Faerie Queene. The first three books of The Faerie Queene were published in 1590 and a second set of three books were published in 1596. This extended epic poem deals with the adventures of knights dragons ladies in distress etc. yet it is also an extended allegory about the moral life and what makes for a life of virtue. With engraved frontispiece of Spenser to Volume I. Spenser was called a Poet's Poet and was admired by William Wordsworth John Keats Lord Byron and Alfred Lord Tennyson among others. The language of his poetry is purposely archaic reminiscent of earlier works such as The Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer and Il Canzoniere of Francesco Petrarca whom Spenser greatly admired. Spenser's Epithalamion is the most admired of its type in the English language. It was written for his wedding to his young bride Elizabeth Boyle. The poem consists of 365 long lines corresponding to the days of the year; 68 short lines representing the sum of the 52 weeks 12 months and 4 seasons of the annual cycle; and 24 stanzas corresponding to the diurnal and sidereal hours. First edition of this collection celebrating the revival of the sonnet tracing its history from Spenser to Shakespeare and Milton through contemporaries Charlotte Smith Mary Robinson and a young Leigh Hunt. The English sonnet fell out of fashion in the early 18th century only to come roaring back to popularity with the publication of Charlotte Smith's ELEGIAC SONNETS in 1784. But this volume provides a much wider and more nuanced picture of the development of the English sonnet including Smith's predecessor Thomas Edwards and her contemporaries Anna Seward whom Henderson especially likes William Lisle Bowles Helen Maria Williams and Mary Robinson. Henderson's introduction contextualizes the wide range of sonnets included from the amatory Robinson to the elegiac Smith. This compendium established the state of playing field for the form in the Romantic era and it was a favorite form of Coleridge Keats Shelley and Wordsworth. Coleridge wrote a pamphlet celebrating the form in 1796 and the first poem Wordsworth published was "Sonnet on Seeing Miss Helen Maria Williams Weep" in 1787 an homage to Williams and Charlotte Smith both. A notable Romantic-era collection unusual in so widely acknowledging the debts of English poetry to women writers. Contemporary half roan marbled paper boards gilt-ruled and -lettered spine. Spines just a shade darker than covers a couple covers with a slightly blotchy appearance due to leather preservative but quite an attractive set in generally fine condition the text fresh and bright and the leather lustrous.<br/> <br/> The first modern English poet to achieve major stature Spenser ca. 1552-99 in Day's words demonstrated "with his fluency in many meters and stanzaic forms . . . that English was at least the equal to any other language as a vehicle of great poetry." While his poems particularly "The Faerie Queene" look backward as the culmination of the allegorical verse tradition of the Pearl Poet Langland and Chaucer he has influenced with "his fertile imagination and especially his sensuous imagery and melodic language" nearly every important English poet who followed him. Day DNB praises Collier's "Spenser" first published in 1862 as "an excellent edition with the completest life of the poet that had as yet appeared." Despite his great knowledge and love of early English authors Collier 1789-1883 suffered a certain diminished respect because of his propensity for textual fabrication. This was true particularly in the case of the notorious "Perkins folio" supposedly containing an early copy of Shakespeare's works with superior variant readings which turned out to be forged. Britannica comments that these "fabrications . . . may charitably . . . be attributed to literary monomania but . . . it is difficult to speak with patience of them so completely did they for a long time bewilder the chronology of Shakespeare's writings." Apart from its important content this set is quite lovely on the shelf. The bindings are unsigned but they have the feel and appearance of work done by James Hayday 1796-1872 one of the most prominent and productive English binders of the 19th century. The present set is typical of Hayday's decorative work for a large market using high quality leather and being liberal with gilt embellishment. Bell and Daldy unknown

A handsome example of the best and most beautiful - according to Brunet - edition of Spensers works. Todds Poetical Works of John Milton 1801 became the standard edition of Milton for some decades. Here Todd assembled critical material by John Hughes Joseph Spence Thomas Wharton and John Upton and contributed his own biography of Spenser as well as additional notes. Writing in the Edinburgh Review vol 13 1806 Sir Walter Scott was less than complimentary. He described Todds style as of a dry sober and sleepy cast and was critical of his decision to reprint the notes of earlier commentators in full at the foot of each page rather than extracting their spirit and essence himself especially where they contradict one another five to one would be odds even against Culley or the Game Chicken and Spenser stood in danger of being overwhelmed but Scott did allow that the text is correctly and judiciously edited. One can sympathise with Scotts rejection of variorum editions but in the present work Todd had compiled a comprehensive survey of Spenserian scholarship as it existed two hundred years after the poets death. This edition was intended as a stylistic companion to Dent's Le Morte d'Arthur 1894-95 illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley and as a competitor to the George Allen edition of The Faerie Queene illustrated by Walter Crane and published the same year. Fairfax-Muckley 1862-1926 was an influential leader of the arts and crafts Birmingham School having studied painting and drawing at the Birmingham School of Art in the early 1880s. A 1901 profile by the Society of Designers declares that he "has always had a strong bent towards the straightforward methods of the early painters. as witness the beautiful designs for his well-known edition of the 'Faerie Queene' which fully express his natural admiration of the early Italian work" p. 171. Dent commissioned Beardsley and Fairfax-Muckley to illustrate his deluxe arts and crafts publications in an effort to emulate the success of the Kelmscott Press. An additional limitation of 100 copies on handmade paper was also issued. 2 vols quarto. 'The Shepheardes Calendar' was Spenser's first major work it emulates Virgil's 'Eclogues'. Both of these works are present in this collection which also includes many of Spenser's minor poems including hymns 'Colin Clout's Come home Again' and 'Amoretti or Sonnets'. Including a memoir of Spenser and also critical dissertations by the Reverend George Gilfillan. George Gilfillan was a spasmodic poet who also edited the works of several British poets.
