Containing all his best-known poetry including The Faerie Queen April and Astrophel. Spenser's masterpiece is an extensive poem The Faerie Queene. The first three books of The Faerie Queene were published in 1590 and a second set of three books were published in 1596. This extended epic poem deals with the adventures of knights dragons ladies in distress etc. yet it is also an extended allegory about the moral life and what makes for a life of virtue. With engraved frontispiece of Spenser to Volume I. Spenser was called a Poet's Poet and was admired by William Wordsworth John Keats Lord Byron and Alfred Lord Tennyson among others. The language of his poetry is purposely archaic reminiscent of earlier works such as The Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer and Il Canzoniere of Francesco Petrarca whom Spenser greatly admired. Spenser's Epithalamion is the most admired of its type in the English language. It was written for his wedding to his young bride Elizabeth Boyle. The poem consists of 365 long lines corresponding to the days of the year; 68 short lines representing the sum of the 52 weeks 12 months and 4 seasons of the annual cycle; and 24 stanzas corresponding to the diurnal and sidereal hours. Complete in eight volumes. Rebound in half-morocco bindings with marbled boards and original spine labels. Externally smart with some minor wear to the spines and some sunfading to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Institutional stamps to recto of front free-endpaper. Pages are spotted with some foxing throughout. Very Good F. C. and J. Rivington hardcover

Uniformly bound in full leather with decorative gilt covers front and back each with an armorial seal raised bands on gilt decorated spines inner dentelles all edges gilt ribbon markers with all covers still attached frontis-piece in Volume I is present foxed. There are two bookplates inside each volume each with a history attached to the owners. The first is E. Dennison being Eduardo Denison. There is a Latin inscription to him in Volume I "Egregio Juveni Eduardo Denison Coll: Oriel: Supt. Ord. Commensali Publica Examinatione In Litenis humaniovibus Primam Clafsem Adepts. D. D. Praepositus et Socii Osielenses. MDCCCXXII". It appears that this set was a gift for passing an exam of importance. In 1868 Argentina Eduardo Denison along with Octavia Hill created Labor Centers Worker's Clubs and Schools to help free those in poverty banishing the systems of handouts in favor of work. He also worked with UNESCO analyzing the influence of Education in the economic growth of a country. The second bookplate being armorial bears the name of W. Harry Rylands 1847-1922 a prolific author Secretary to the Society of Biblical Archaeology specializing in Oriental Archaeology and the Hittite Language. He also designed a fount of Hittite type with this just touching upon his extensive activities in the fields of literature and antiquities. Covers show edge/corner wear some upper spine weakness due to the books being improperly pulled from shelves interior shows occasional light foxing. Printed For F. C. and J. Rivington, T. Edited by John Payne Collier. <br/> VERY ATTRACTIVE DEEP BLUE PEBBLE-GRAIN MOROCCO HANDSOMELY GILT covers with frames of one dogtooth and three plain rules raised bands spines in antique-style compartments with delicate scrolling cornerpieces and intricate central fleuron surrounded by small tools densely gilt floral turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges gilt. With frontispiece portrait of Spenser in volume I. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Herbert Lionel Bashford M. A. Dibon Lodge Godalming. See: Day "History of English Literature to 1660" pp. 187-89. Spines just a shade darker than covers a couple covers with a slightly blotchy appearance due to leather preservative but quite an attractive set in generally fine condition the text fresh and bright and the leather lustrous.<br/> <br/> The first modern English poet to achieve major stature Spenser ca. 1552-99 in Day's words demonstrated "with his fluency in many meters and stanzaic forms . . . that English was at least the equal to any other language as a vehicle of great poetry." While his poems particularly "The Faerie Queene" look backward as the culmination of the allegorical verse tradition of the Pearl Poet Langland and Chaucer he has influenced with "his fertile imagination and especially his sensuous imagery and melodic language" nearly every important English poet who followed him. Day DNB praises Collier's "Spenser" first published in 1862 as "an excellent edition with the completest life of the poet that had as yet appeared." Despite his great knowledge and love of early English authors Collier 1789-1883 suffered a certain diminished respect because of his propensity for textual fabrication. This was true particularly in the case of the notorious "Perkins folio" supposedly containing an early copy of Shakespeare's works with superior variant readings which turned out to be forged. Britannica comments that these "fabrications . . . may charitably . . . be attributed to literary monomania but . . . it is difficult to speak with patience of them so completely did they for a long time bewilder the chronology of Shakespeare's writings." Apart from its important content this set is quite lovely on the shelf. The bindings are unsigned but they have the feel and appearance of work done by James Hayday 1796-1872 one of the most prominent and productive English binders of the 19th century. The present set is typical of Hayday's decorative work for a large market using high quality leather and being liberal with gilt embellishment. Bell and Daldy unknown
