Portfolio with 15 pochoirs of Picasso original wash drawings reproduced by Daniel Jacomet portraying bullfighting and flamenco dancing. This copy also includes one lithograph on Richard de Bas wove dated "le 14.12.60." and is signed and numbered in pencil by Picasso. The lithograph depicts a lancing scene and the same image was used on the poster for the exhibition in April-May 1961 at Galerie Bellechasse to present the 15 original wash drawings reproduced in the album. The drawings were done between July 1959 and June 1960 they accompany a Pablo Neruda poem titled 'Toro' translated by Jean Marcenac. Limited numbered edition of 520 copies printed in Velin d Arches paper of which this is one of 50 with the signed and numbered lithograph. Each print is also numbered in pencil. Portfolio and signed lithograph bear a different number. Loose as issued bound in a red satin portfolio lightly worn with a drawing after Picasso in black linen flaps and tie-strings. Clandestine first Chilean edition of Neruda's stunning epic poem published underground by the Communist party in Chile under a false imprint one month after the true first edition published in Mexico from a different manuscript. Quarto bound into contemporary red linen boards with parts of original printed wrappers serving as titles to the front panel and spine. Copyright leaf mounted to front pastedown bearing the false imprint "Imprenta Juarez Reforma 75 Ciudad de Mexico D.F." half tone portraits of Neruda tipped in at front and back. Inscribed by Neruda on the title page "Al camarada Americo Pablo Neruda." The recipient Americo Zorilla was a close friend of Neruda's and editor of the Chilean Communist daily newspaper El Siglo. Zorilla facilitated the clandestine publication of five thousand copies of Neruda's Canto General in Chile published under a false imprint and based on a manuscript Neruda had left behind before he went into hiding with the banning of the Communist Party under the Ley de Defensa Permanente de la Democracia in 1948. Neruda had officially joined the Communist Party of Chile in 1945 and served as campaign manager for the radical party's presidential candidate Gabriel Gonzalez Videal in 1946. Once in office Gonzalez Videla turned against the Communist Party and Neruda was forced into hiding and later exile in Buenos Aires to avoid arrest. An exceptional association. "Canto General" "General Song" consists of 15 sections 231 poems and more than 15000 lines. It is the stunning epic of an entire continent and its people. The Canto speaks of the destiny of Latin American peoples and the life of the poet himself. Without question this is one of the most important and powerful long poems written in the century. "Neruda was a kind of King Midas. Everything he touched turned to poetry" says Gabriel García Márquez who also considers the Chilean Nobel laureate "the greatest poet of the twentieth century in any language." Small folio. In early 1960 they had met the poet W.S. Merwin and his wife Dido who became close to the couple and helped Plath and Hughes find a London Flat. In the spring of 1961 Merwin gave Plath the use of his studio and she began work on the novel that was to become the Bell Jar "working seven days a week from eight to one" and finishing the novel just before moving to Court Green the house in Devon that Plath and Hughes had recently purchased where she wrote the majority of her book Ariel and where Hughes lived in for the rest of his life.<br /> <br /> The transmission of Merwin's translations of Neruda's poems all from his Residence on Earth 1934-1945 was not aired on the Third Programme until 19 April 1962. Merwin's lively imagistic translations of Neruda would not be published until 1969 in Twenty Love Poems and his version of Neruda's Selected Poems in 1970 both published by Jonathan Cape. Eliot C. Double signed by Neruda; once with just his last name in green pen on the limitation page and then again on the verso of the half-title page in red pen with a large doodle of a kite and an inscription to Chilean author Juan Agustin Palazuelos dated 1963. Published in Mexico City in March of 1950 this copy was printed on "Malinche" paper colophon. Folio measuring approximately 14 x 10 inches; 568 pages plus subscriber list subscribers include Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso. Publisher's red cloth boards with gilt fish imprint on cover and gilt lettering on spine. Gilt is quite faded and the cloth is somewhat soiled and faded as well. Rubbing to edges exposing boards at the corners. Cloth on spine is wrinkled. Binding is in a delicate condition with cracking gutters and a downward slant to the text block. Interior is clean except for a stain to the top edge of about the first 200 pages that does not impact content. Text block has a very faded purple top stain and uneven trim on the fore-edge. Features stunningly colorful endpapers decorated with an illustration by Diego Rivera in the front and another by David A. Siqueiros in the rear. Red cloth ribbon bookmark is faded. Overall good condition. Content is entirely in Spanish. This is a highly collectable copy of an epic book of poetry by Nobel Prize winning Chilean poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda. Canto General which translates to General Song consists of hundreds of poems separated into 15 sections and is widely considered to be one of Neruda's essential works. This is a discursive and wide-ranging contemplation of Chilean authors Mariano Latorre and Pedro Prado the question of influence and the history of Latin America and its place in the world. Original printed yellow and red card covers. Internally the 32 pages are staple bound and the binding remains tight. Just the merest hint of light rusting to the staples internally. Light spotting throughout due the quality of the paper stock used a little heavier in places. Free from inscriptions and erasures. There is some professional transparent reinforcement tape to the front and rear inner hinges where the covers have become detached from the spine but this is barely discernable. Some light edge wear to the spine ends of the thin card printed covers which are mildly toned in places but are remarkably clean for their age. A scarce survivor of what was a cheap production. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. A very scarce pamphlet containing contributions from 148 British and Irish authors on their personal stance on the Spanish Civil War. The question posed is: 'Are you for or against the legal Government and the People of Republican Spain Are you for or against Franco and Fascism' and is signed off by Aragon W. H. Auden Jean Richard Bloch Nancy Cunard Brian Howard Heinrich Mann Ivor Montagu Pablo Neruda Ramon Sender Stephen Spender and Tristan Tzara. The publisher states its limitations within a six penny pamphlet i.e. that it has indeed selected the responses likely based on its own motivation though it does say the responses herein are representative but more so from the weight of the authors themselves. Indeed it contains most of the powerhouse names of British and Irish literature; W. H. Auden Samuel Beckett who perhaps satirically simply writes UPTHEREPUBLIC! Cyril Connolly Alastair Crowley with his name misspelt C. Day Lewis Liam O Flaherty Ford Madox Ford David Garnett Victor Gollancz Aldous Huxley Storm Jameson John Lehmann Sylvia Pankhurst Herbert Read Stephen Spender Olaf Stapledon Leonard Woolf and many others. Wells and Vita Sackville-West among others declare themselves neutral the latter questioning the publication s terminology in the question regarding a legal government. An extremely scarce pamphlet a rare survivor in all senses which gave audiences direct insights into ideas and worlds some authors seldom expressed themselves in and a hugely important booklet. This extremely scarce pamphlet is one of an edition of three thousand copies which sold out immediately on publication. JSIC reports 13 holdings at institutions. Neruda first visited Machu Picchu in 1943 however he did not begin writing the poem until 1945. The French writer Roger Caillois visited him while he was composing it and began to publish his translations in January 1946 but the first partial publication in Spanish did not occur until July 1946. This first edition in book form was published by a Santiago bookstore a courageous effort at a time when Neruda was in hiding from the police in a friend's basement. Original wrappers a little tanned and with some small areas of paper restoration to the edges; a very good copy of a book scarce in commerce. Neruda's final book of verse inscribed in green ink to two renowned Chilean painters and fellow leftists: "Salud! a José Balmes y Gracia Barrios Pablo Neruda 1973 Isla Negra." An outstanding association copy of one of Neruda's most controversial works.<br /> <br /> A polemic on behalf of Salvador Allende's Unidad Popular party ahead of Congressional elections in March of 1973 "Incitement to Nixoncide and Praise for the Chilean Revolution" was prompted by US attempts to undermine the Allende government in favor of pro-US business elements inside Chile. As Neruda explains in the prologue to the poem cycle in translation: "My song is a tough attack on the enemies of my people as hard as Araucanian stone. This may be an ephemeral function. But I am fulfilling it. And I am resorting to the oldest weapons available to poetry: song and pamphleteering used by the classics and the romantics with the aim of destroying the enemy. So stand firm I'm about to fire the first shot!" Allende's government was toppled nevertheless by a US-backed military junta headed by Augusto Pinochet in September 1973. See Feinstein Pablo Neruda pp. 392ff for more on the political context in which the book was written. <br /> <br /> The Chilean painters José Balmes 1927-2016 and Gracia Barrios b. 1927 were active in Unidad Popular politics at the time of this inscription. In the same year Balmes created a series of works "Imaginarios del Canto General" based on texts from Neruda's epic "Canto General." Their relationship began decades earlier however: born in Catalonia Balmes arrived in Chile with 2200 other refuges from the Spanish Civil War in 1939 aboard the SS Winnipeg; a rescue mission which Neruda as Special Consul for Immigration personally orchestrated. Artist's book one of 50 copiesall on Canson paper in several colors blue cream beige grey lavender signed by the artist on each of the two etchings in pencil and dated "88". Page size: 9-13/16 x 6-1/2 inches; 32pp. Bound: loose as issued in red wrappers printed in black with author and title; housed in custom-made orange cloth over boards clamshel box with "a sus amigo" printeded in dark orange and the name of the press and paraphe box a bit rubbed but book is fine. These two poems by Pablo Neruda printed by Ruben Paul LaPolla in black red green blue and brown ink often two colors per page were set by hand by Samuel Cesar Palui in 12pt Garamond. Ernesto Lowenstein oversaw the printing of this lovely New Year's greeting for friends of the press. This is a lovely book of verse complemented with two stunning etchings by Alicia Scavino - mystical magical and a loving homage to the poet. Ediciones Dos Amigos unknown books
