Wrappers lightly soiled small blank label laid down inside lower wrap near fine. A speech given by Neruda at that time the Chilean Ambassador to France and a recent Nobel laureate at the P.E.N. Club of New York on the occasion of the organization's 50th anniversary. This pamphlet was published by the Chilean embassy in Uruguay from a copy of the speech provided to them by the Central Bank of Chile. According to The New York Times Neruda who was introduced by Arthur Miller and received a standing ovation after his speech spoke at the "generous and fraternal association" to pay the debt he felt Latin American writers owed to Americans such as Walt Whitman Theodore Dreiser and a more recent generation of "great and noble writers faced with the conflicts involved in the vertiginous growth of your capitalist structure." The article was titled "Neruda Opens Visit Here With a Plea for Chile's Revolution."

The Chilean Embassy believes that Neruda's words should be known with the greatest amplitude. With that intention it spreads them in this brother country". Juan María Bordaberry was sworn in as president of Uruguay in 1972; the following year he would dissolve the Uruguayan General Assembly and rule as a military-sponsored dictator until 1976. Uncommon. Pablo Neruda 1904-1973 was a Chilean poet and diplomat who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971. Recognized during his life as "a people's poet" he is considered one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . Editorial Losada paperback

1973CGP5
8º. 186p Book order. Original editor's rustic binding.

These poems found on his desk at the time of his death include the moving "Final" a love song to his wife Matilde which he concluded shortly before dying. Faced with imminent death he comments: "It was so beautiful to live / when you lived!"

On November 28 1973 the first of his posthumous books is published: "El mar y las campanas" The Sea and the Bells by Editorial Losada in Buenos Aires. Professor Hernán Loyola notes that this seems to be the most fitting book not only to close the series of posthumous books "but also – due to its extraordinary quality as a whole – to dignify the entire canonical work of Neruda." Loyola adds that this book "included touching texts dedicated to a rising river and a small dying animal to the Utopia that did not come to the appointment in the image of a ship that everyone expects and that never passes through the horizon to a writer of 'mean condition' . to the port of Valparaíso. and to himself in a struggle with death."
Losada paperback
