This issue contains the text of President Jefferson's Message to Congress of Nov. 8th. In his speech Jefferson discusses relations with foreign powers including the Delaware and other Indian tribes the Louisiana Purchase; the United States Navy; and the federal budget. Critical of Jefferson Croswell would later be tried for libel and defended before the Supreme Court by Alexander Hamilton. The publication of this weekly newspaper would continue through 1807. unknown

Faint toning at folds; near fine.</p> <p>Prospectus for Negro Musicians and Their Music published in 1936 by Carter Woodson’s Associated Publishers the first firm devoted exclusively to publishing Black-themed books and related materials. The 439-page illustrated book is promoted as the first history of Blacks in music and the first “to compare scientifically the achievements of the Negro in this sphere with those of other advanced peoples.â€</p> <p>The prospectus reprints the book’s table of contents as well as six newspaper or magazine reviews including those in The Knickerbocker Press The Boston Globe The Birmingham News-Age-Herald and The Nashville Banner. An order blank is printed on the back.</p> <p>“The Associated Publishers was born in the fertile mind of Carter G. Woodson being part of his plan to correct the widely held belief that the Negro had no history. Following World War I Woodson sensed a desire among Negroes to know more about their past. Publishing companies however were not interested in bringing out serious works on the Negro. Brown leather bindings with embossed covers raised bands on spines and gilt titles on spines. All edges gilt. Leather is rubbed along the joints corners and board edges. Leather is torn bottom of volume 3. Light to moderate toning and scattered foxing to all volumes. Volume 1 has two frontispieces including a portrait of George Washington as a young officer. Volume 4 front board reattached and front hinge repaired. All volumes have the previous owner printed name labels of C. P. Crawford on the front paste downs. C. P. Crawford was a Confederate Captain during the Civil War. He practiced law in Milledgeville Georgia after the war. D. Rice & A. N. Hart unknown

An unusually long panoramic viewbook measuring about 14" x 4.5". 17 color panoramic illustrations of picturesque and historical locales along the mighty Mississippi River with 12pp. of printed tissue leaves two of which introduce the material while the others contain captions and summaries of the panoramas. Side-stapled apparently as issued and with some creasing and short marginal tearing to front cover and a few leaves but otherwise clean and sound which is unusual for so fragile and ephemeral a publication; overall very good. There seems to be little consistency among the few known copies of this panorama. OCLC records just a few holdings each of which offers a different number of panoramic views contained within. Note that only the copy held at the Minnesota Historical Society contains the same numebr of plates and text leaves; all other holdings note far fewer panoramas 8 7 and 5. A scarce and wonderful example of souvenir color printing done by "Manz Colortypes" of Chicago who signed each panorama in print around the turn of the century. C. T. Peick & Co unknown

Stated eighteenth edition but OCLC locates no other editions of this title so this was likely a marketing tactic to increase the impression of the book's popularity. OCLC finds only four worldwide holdings of the physical book: one in Canada and three in the U.S. An extensively illustrated general encyclopedia for popular consumption which includes "whole chapters upon" subjects including Fine Arts Jurisprudence Vegetable Creation Animal Creation Mineralogy Chronology and more; edited by "The Ablest Talent the World Affords." 9'' x 6.5''. Publisher's original stemped and gilt decorative red cloth. 514 pages/ Very good. Modest scuffs edgewear to boards. Pages moderately to foxed throughout but complete and unmarked.
