In fair condition a tight copy on aged paper in worn wraps. Ownership stamp of the Sussex ornithologist H. L. F. Guermonprez on front free endpaper. After '. Puzzles and Paradoxes' the title continues: 'With a Series of Comic Lessons for Fireside Recreation.' Among the sections are 'Transposition of Letters' 'Conundrums' 'Enigmas and Riddles' 'Charades' 'Practical Puzzles and Paradoxes' and 'The Alliterative Lesson'. The second half of the volume is devoted to 'Parlour Games'. The printed circular is a request for the "early settlement" of an outstanding bill adding that "A Catalogue of the whole of the extensive and valuable Stock of the late Partnership is now published; and each article will be sold for ready money with a Discount of Ten per Cent. from the marked prices." The manuscript portion comprises the name of the debtor and a detailed receipt for payment for numbers of the "Edinburgh Review" received in 1814 and 1815 signed "W. Tripp". In fair condition lightly aged and creased. Folded three times. Addressed to ‘Oscar Browning Esq’ and signed ‘A. &. C. Black’. The firm is replying to a note of Browning’s of 7 July 1891 ‘desiring our assent to the separate publication in book form of your Articles from the Encylopaedia Britannica. on Dante & Goethe’. They ‘have pleasure in complying therewith on the usual understanding that the sources of the articles is duly acknowledged & a copy of the book sent to us when published’. The Dante and Goethe books based on Browning’s articles in the ninth edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica were published in London by Swan Sonnenschein & Co in 1891 and 1892 respectively. 10 July 1891; on letterhead of A. & C.
