176830081à Rome Rome Paris: Aux dépens de la Congrégation de l'Index 1768. Fine. Aux dépens de la Congrégation de l'Index à Rome Rome Paris 1768 10 x 15.50 cm deux parties en un volume relié The first edition appeared in 1763 at the same address under the title: L'arretin ou la débauche de l'esprit en fait de bon sens. Contemporary full citron morocco binding. Smooth spine decorated. Green morocco title-label. Triple fillet frame on covers. Edges gilt. Handsome copy. Upper joint lightly rubbed. L'arretin consists of 25 essays and tales on subjects as diverse as Les nègres L'agriculture La chasteté ou le célibat Histoire de maître Pierre etc. These are all violent critiques sometimes direct sometimes satirical or allegorical of Biblical teaching the church and its history. Abbé Du Laurens 1719-1793 was a polemical and anti-religious writer whose works are all libertine and licentious but above all profoundly anti-religious. The author did not hesitate to descend to the lowest trivialities to support his critique but his comic inventions often astonishing earned him praise. Pursued for his books he took refuge in Holland then was imprisoned in Mainz in 1767 to end his days at 74 in a convent. 'This book is a lively and rather ribald critique of the principal stories of the Bible. L'epouse de Suze is a critique of La nouvelle Heloïse. Le sage Pangloss is Solomon the wisest of men it is an original chapter even through its singular biblical citations. L'histoire de Suzon is that of Susanna and the two elders l'histoire de Godemiché. The origin of these instruments of chamois or velvet that became so common in convents. Finally les Couvens de Jésuites is an allegory of the history of Sodom. In a word the entire volume is rather a facetious critique of the Bible and clerical institutions than a simply ribald book'. Gay/Lemonnyer I 263-264. Aux dépens de la Congrégation de l'Index unknown

This is one of the Anthologies Illustrees Les Provinces Francaises series. Anatole le Braz the "Bard of Brittany" 2 April 1859 – 20 March 1926 was a Breton poet folklore collector and translator. He was highly regarded amongst both European and American scholars and was known for his warmth and charm. He began school at the age of 10 at Saint-Brieuc and progressed swiftly to a degree at the Sorbonne where he studied for seven years. He then returned to Brittany where for 14 years he taught at the Lycée at Quimper and gradually translated old Breton songs into modern French continuing the folklore work of François-Marie Luzel. He often entertained local peasants and fishermen in the old manor house where he lived recording their songs and tales. His book Chansons de la Bretagne "Songs of Brittany" was awarded a prize by the Académie française. In 1898 he became president of the Union régionaliste bretonne formed in Morlaix following the Breton festivals. In 1899 he joined the Association des bleus de Bretagne. He was made lecturer and then professor in the Faculty of Arts at Rennes University between 1901 and 1924. Brittany is a peninsula historical country and cultural area in the north-west of modern France covering the western part of what was known as Armorica in Roman Gaul. It became an independent kingdom and then a duchy before being united with the Kingdom of France in 1532 as a province governed as a separate nation under the crown. Brittany is the traditional homeland of the Breton people and is one of the six Celtic nations retaining a distinct cultural identity that reflects its history. Brittany has also been referred to as Little Britain as opposed to Great Britain with which it shares an etymology. It is bordered by the English Channel to the north Normandy to the northeast eastern Pays de la Loire to the southeast the Bay of Biscay to the south and the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its land area is 13136 sq mi. Brittany is the site of some of the world's oldest standing architecture home to the Cairn of Barnenez the Tumulus Saint-Michel and others which date to the early 5th millennium BC. Today the historical province of Brittany is split among five French departments: Finistère in the west Côtes-d'Armor in the north Ille-et-Vilaine in the northeast Morbihan in the south and Loire-Atlantique in the southeast. Loire-Atlantique now belongs to the Pays de la Loire region while the other four departments make up the Brittany region. At the 2010 census the population of historic Brittany was estimated to be 4475295. In 2017 the largest metropolitan areas were Nantes 934165 inhabitants Rennes 733320 inhabitants and Brest 321364 inhabitants. Brittany is the traditional homeland of the Breton people and is one of the six Celtic nations retaining a distinct cultural identity that reflects its history. A nationalist movement seeks greater autonomy within the French Republic or independence from it. The reunification of Brittany is supported by half of the inhabitants of Brittany and of Loire-Atlantique and is considered a prerequisite to further autonomy. Librairie Renouard hardcover
