His family was politically active in the French Revolution. <br> A banned book. The work was written as a satire of prominent figures of the day including the King. The publication of this book was suppressed. French authorities seized and destroyed the book and the supposed author Genard was imprisoned in the Bastille. de Gran being an anagram for Genard "On remarque dans cette production des impietes couvertes des passages de l'Ecriture. On y distingue surtout les portraits de Louis XV de la marquise de Pompadour du prince Edouard etc. La polise saisit l'ouvrage et chercha l'auteur; il fut arrete et conduit a la Bastille le 10 Mars 1752. Plusieurs personnes de condition s'interessant a cet ecrivain qui avait de l'esprit et faisait des vers procurerent probablement son elargissement au bout de quelques mois Genard profita de sa liberte pour voyager." Notable figures include inter alia Apelles advisor to Philip V of Macedon; Lucius Aelius Sejanus confidant of Emperor Tiberius; Pierre de la Broce councillor of Philippe II of France and Maio of Bari Grand Admiral of Sicily during the reign of William I. The work is appended by a detailed narrative by counsellor at the court of Louis XIII Michel de Marillac 1563-1632 concerning the events surrounding the assassination of his fellow courtier Concino Concini marquis dé Ancre d. 1617 at the behest of the King. Original printed wrappers.The pages 107-108 were reprinted in fascicule II with slightly different text. Part III contains the "Catalogus extramarinorum galliae testaceorum", being a complete list of all the genera treated in the whole work, plus the original diagnoses/descriptions of all of Dupuy's new species in the first three parts of this work, which therefore all date at least from 15 February 1849. Some plates lightly spotted, a few with marginal staining, not reaching the figures. Wrappers frayed on spine, one with paper of spine missing. Inscribed on front wrappers by former owners Walter Wächtler and Herbert Lutz, and the minuscule stamp of Herbert Ant on the title page.
