Cognac; brandy Ten manuscript business letters seven in English and two in French from six British wine merchants to the French cognac house Messrs. Otard Dupuy & Co. placing orders reporting news of the Brandy trade in Britain and shipping.

12211From Aberdeen Exeter London Liverpool Stockton Sunderland. Between 1828 and 1859. The ten items total 19pp. 4to. Each is a bifolium with the address and postmarks on the reverse of the second leaf. Each is docketed by Otard Dupuy. All ten are in excellent condition on lightly-aged paper. The six firms are: Bevan & Smith Liverpool two letters both 1850; Christopher Bushell & Co. Liverpool 1859; John Currie two letters both in French: London 1828 and Stockton 1828; A. Leveau three letters: Aberdeen 1849 Exeter 1850 and Sunderland 1850; William Strachan & Co London 1828; George Wildes & Co. London 1828. Leveau would appear to have acted as Otard Dupuy's British agent as his three letters give information of the settling of accounts with other firms. On 5 June 1850 he writes: 'I find the Brandy trade quite at a stand still as far has sic ordering is concerned but at this time of the year presume it is always so. I paid Messrs. Jackson of Hull £3 - 15 - 0 which please credit my a/c'. On 18 January 1828 John Currie writes in French with quotations in English relating to the loss of stock on a voyage: 'properly stowed but leaked from a head in consequence of the heading being too short' and 'leaked from a head being shifted apparently from the pressure of the Puncheons stowed above it'. On 6 December 1859 the firm of Christopher Bushell writes that 'there is no House in Cognac with whom we would have allied ourselves more readily because we believe there is none more honorable and respectable than your own; but notwithstanding that we have undertaken a somewhat arduous task in the introduction of a new Brand we have nevertheless worked most happily and harmoniously with our present friends and we have every reason to hope and to believe that our connexion with them will long continue.' 18071403455Paris: Dentu 1807. First French Edition. Hardcover. Octavo 2 iv 421 pages plus a fold-out map of the Silesia region of Prussia. In Good minus condition. In brown leather three-quarter binding with darker leather boards. Spine paneled with blind-tooled lettering and decoration. Marbled endpapers. Boards are moderately soiled and show heavy rubbing at corners along joints and on all edges. Significant wear and scuffing to the leather of the three-quarter binding with more moderate wear on the boards. Large chip missing from the top of the spine. Text block shows mild wear on the edges with dust soiling to the top edge. Fore edge of the map sticks out somewhat and shows slightly heavier wear. Significant splitting at the front hinge and in the gutter of page 1 and the map with the front board and first signature nearly loose as a result. Faint staining and soiling present in the gutters throughout the book. Some leaves near the end of the book have uncut edges. SH consignment. Shelved in Room A. . This book consists of the letters written by John Quincy Adams to his family concerning the central European region of Silesia which Adams wrote in 1800 and 1801 while traveling through that area during his time as the U.S. ambassador to Prussia. Bill Bird was an American publisher best known for running the Three Mountains Press a small press that published many prominent modernists in the 1920s including Ezra Pound Ernest Hemingway James Joyce William Carlos Williams and Robert McAlmon with Ezra Pound serving as editor. Over a period of two and a half years he published 9 works. Concurrently he founded Consolidated Press Service and worked there as a journalist from 1920-1933 when he joined the New York Sun as chief foreign correspondent. Forced to flee France after the Nazi invasion he wrote articles warning of war. After WWII he moved to Tangier and was the editor of the Tangier Gazette. This title was among Bird's private collection having been carted by him from Paris where he stayed until 1940 to Spain Tangiers and finally back to Paris and by descent to the US. 1403455.
