2005104750Paris: Somogy editions d'art 2005. Hardbound. As New. Black cloth with color glossy pictorial dustjacket. 125 pp. over 70 mostly color plates and illustrations. Text is in French. Published to accompany an exhibition that was made up of 44 works. Extensive annotations provide original scholarship and research. The Greuze Museum acquired the only preparatory study preserved for the reception piece of Jean-Baptiste Greuze 1725-1805 at the Academy: Septimius Severus reproaching his son Caracalla for having wanted to assassinate him in the parades of Scotland. The book reveals the painter's intentions and the reasons for his failure at the Academy to reveal the ideological fabric and the theoretical stakes of the case. The Septimus Severus now preserved in the Louvre marks a decisive step in the career of Jean-Baptiste Greuze 1725-1805. Then famous for his portraits and scenes of everyday life Greuze decides to paint contrary to all expectations a painting of history for his reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture: Septimius Severus reproaching Caracalla for his Son of having wished to assassinate him in the defiles of Scotland. This major work considered as one of the first milestones of neoclassicism provoked intense controversy during its presentation at the Academy on August 23 1769 and then at the Salon a few days later. This work published on the occasion of the bicentennial of the death of the painter reopens the file of the very famous affair of Septimius Severus one of the cruel episodes of the life of Greuze. - from the Somogy web site. 192015625Pissburgh: Reed & Witting Company 1920. Decorative Cloth. Very Good. The uncommon 1920 1st edition of this remarkable first-person account of the action on the battlefields of France in 1918 arguably the War's most decisive year from the perspective of a single American machine gunner. THIS COPY IS WARMLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR'S FATHER HERBERT DU PUY WHO HERE STATES THAT "COL. CHARLES M. DUPUY THE AUTHOR DIED ON JANUARY 25 1925 FROM THE AFFECTS OF HIS SEVERE ARMY LIFE. HE WAS BURIED WITH MILITARY HONORS ON JANUARY 28 1925". The father's inscription is clearly a powerful one --if somewhat ambiguous-- and leaves open the possibility that his son died by his own hand having apparently been deeply traumatized by his service. The book is solid well-preserved and VG in its duo-tone cloth with light soiling and scuffing to the the panels. Internally very light soiling to the the endsheets and light minor creasing along a number of the pages. Quarto crisp impressive black-and-white photos thruout complement Colonel DuPuy's text.

Reed & Witting Company hardcover books
19510026061951. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. Unique collection of 74 watercolors ink drawings collages and mixed media playful caricatures of a Parisian advertising executive presumably by members of his creative staff. Most of the individual send-ups are imaginative and amusing; the cumulative effect though is truly extraordinary in the sheer variety and range of the works. As a whole the album honors not merely a particular individual but the human creative spirit! Thus we have a Soviet Dupuy an angelic Dupuy an overworked Dupuy a gaucho Dupuy a scout Dupuy a wandering eye Dupuy a lolling Dupuy; he is depicted as a painter a mariner a general and on and on. These various roles assigned to him scarcely suggest the richness of ideas of the particular artwork. In just one drawing showing the executive in a bathtub we see floating atop the water the names of products presumably ones he promoted and other names spraying over him from the showerhead. Dupuy based on the wealth of images we have of him was a quintessential Frenchman in his appearance; we can also surmise that he was beloved if not also feared a bit and certainly he had to have had a charisma for few businessmen have probably ever received such an effortful and remarkable tribute as represented by this manuscript. The folio measures 33 by 28 cm 13 by 11 inches. With a dust jacket that at its center has a cameo relief of Dupuy himself. The DJ now protected with mylar has use creases minor spotting and toning. The leaves are all clean and the album is tight.

hardcover books
