Mitchell ha nel panorama teorico della cultura visuale odierna, mentre il suo specifico concetto dell'iconologia viene spiegato come una "sintomatologia culturale" nel costante cambiamento. Nella seconda parte, si discute su genealogia storica e aporie contemporanee dei visual studies, e del ruolo che Mitchell, Moxey, Elkins, Boehm, Belting, Sachs-Hombach e altri teorici e storici dell'arte e della cultura hanno avuto nella fama accademica mondiale dei visual studies e della Bildwissenschaft. La terza parte è dedicata a un problema fondamentale della cultura visuale che è appunto il complesso rapporto tra immagine e testo. Vengono presentate le basi del concetto di iconologia letteraria di Mitchell e infine si propone un'interpretazione originale di due scrittori italiani, Niccolò Ammaniti e Alessandro Baricco, nella chiave iconologico-culturale.
