Elevé chez les jésuites de sa ville, il eut comme condisciple Jean-François Rameau, le célèbre “neuveu”. Attaché à l’administration de la Marine, il occupa un poste en Martinique de 1747 à 1759. Victime de l’escroquerie du jésuite La Valette, il rentra en France et se fixa à Pierry en Champagne pour se consacrer à la littérature. Adversaire des Lumières, cherchant sa voie dans l’illuminisme de Saint-Martin, puis des Elus Coëns avant de sombrer dans un mysticisme politico-religieux pour prêcher la contre-Révolution. Il fut guillotiné en 1792. Cazotte séduira les romantiques, Gérard de Nerval lui consacre un long article dans les Illuminés.“Avec Ollivier, Cazotte découvre le procédé du surnaturel expliqué.
