14467n.p.: n.p. n.d. Ephemera. good. 4" x 3" 1 card printed card slightly soiled. The printed card reads "With the Compliments of Bernard M. Baruch"; the back is blank. Bernard Mannes Baruch /August 19 1870 - June 20 1965 was an American financier stock investor philanthropist and statesman. After his success in business he devoted his time toward advising U.S. Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt on economic matters and became a philanthropist. Baruch became a partner in A.A. Housman & Company. With his earnings he bought a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. There he amassed a fortune before the age of 30 by profiting from the sugar market; at that time plantations were booming in Hawaii. By 1903 Baruch had his own brokerage firm and gained the reputation of "The Lone Wolf of Wall Street" because of his refusal to join any financial house. By 1910 he had become one of Wall Street's best-known financiers. In 1916 Baruch left Wall Street to advise President Woodrow Wilson on national defense and terms of peace. He served on the Advisory Commission to the Council of National Defense and in 1918 became the chairman of the new War Industries Board. This body successfully managed the US's economic mobilization during World War I. In 1919 Wilson asked Baruch to serve as a staff member at the Paris Peace Conference. Baruch did not approve of the reparations France and Britain demanded of Germany and supported Wilson's view that there needed to be new forms of cooperation as well as the creation of the League of Nations. A compliments card or slip or with compliments slip is a slip of paper that usually contains the same name and address information that would be on a letterhead of formal letter stationery the pre-printed salutation "with compliments" or "with our/my compliments" and space afterwards for a short handwritten message that could be added. It is used in correspondence as an enclosure for other material. Compliments cards or slips which are informal can sometimes substitute for more formal letters of reply. For example the response to a request for a product catalogue or a price list may simply be the price list or catalogue with a compliments slip attached rather than with a formal letter of reply. The inclusion of compliments slips in responses to such routine requests is often seen by businesses as a necessary step in maintaining good public relations. There is no fixed size for compliments cards/slips. They may vary in size from the size of a business or visiting card from which compliments slips originally evolved to the size of a whole sheet of letter writing paper. Since they are informal compliments slips are not substitutes in those cases where a formal letter is appropriate or required for legal reasons. n.p. unknown

71053A portrait of Bernard Baruch signed to humorist Harry Hershfield. It reads "For Harry Hershfield who radiates sunshine and good feeling wherever he goes with appreciation and best wishes from one who has basked in that sunshine BM Baruch 1952." Hershfield was an American cartoonist humor writer and radio personality. He was known as "the Jewish Will Rogers". He also was a columnist for the New York Daily Mirror. His books include Laugh Louder Live Longer and Now I'll Tell One. As a comics artist he is best remembered for his newspaper comic Abie the Agent. The image measures 7.75 inches by 10.75 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 22.5 inches by 18.5 inches. A nice association uncommon with such a warm inscription. Bernard Baruch was an American financier stock investor philanthropist statesman and political consultant. After his success in business he devoted his time toward advising U.S. Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt on economic matters. Baruch was well-known and often walked or sat in Washington D.C's Lafayette Park and in New York City's Central Park. It was not uncommon for him to discuss government affairs with other people while sitting on a park bench. This became his most famous characteristic. In 1960 on his ninetieth birthday a commemorative park bench in Lafayette Park across from the White House was dedicated to him by the Boy Scouts. He continued to advise on international affairs until his death on June 20 1965 in New York City at the age of 94. His funeral at Temple Shaaray Tefila the family synagogue was attended by 700 people. His grave is at Flushing Cemetery Flushing Queens New York City. unknown
