Contemporary half calf over marbled boards measuring 168 x 100mm and collating complete: 20 338; 12 324. A square copy with joints professionally renewed; some chipping to spine labels and gentle shelfwear to boards. Faint dampstaining to lower corner of contents in volume I and paper loss to upper corner of pages 203-204 affecting 9 lines each. Volume II overall clean with long archivally reinforced tear to pages 131-132 and paper loss to lower corner of pages 171-172 with no text loss in either case. An exceptionally scarce fantastical travel narrative with erotic content published by notorious Grub Street writer and demi-monde ally Samuel Derrick. ESTC locates only three copies at institutions BL Columbia and UCLA and of the three copies to appear in the modern auction record the most recent was in 1941. The present is the only example on the market. <br /> <br /> In a 1763 review in The Critical Review or Annals of Literature vol. 15 Samuel Derrick's Collection of Travels is derided as a book for "those who read merely for amusement and care not for turning up the huge collection of voyages traveled by Purchas Churchill Astley Harris &c" due to its "total neglect of dates total want of maps a strange perversion of names a general lack of precision or accuracy." These same reviewers make a dismissive nod to how "the adventures of captain John Smith savour strongly of romance" and suggest that the work "does not seem to have been intended so much for serious reading as for pleasing the imagination" but they fail to grasp just how much this is the case. No matter how deeply Samuel Derrick sought to portray himself as a participant in London's intelligentsia he was ultimately a Grub Street hack who "wrote to eat" and not from "any great artistic urge" Rubenhold. Having learned early on that "hacks and whores shared much common ground" Derrick became not only a "gentleman defender" and friend to several of London's demi-monde he also used their escapades as inspiration for his writing and his writing to promote their reputations and services.<br /> <br /> Such is the case with the present work designed for stoking the reader's fantasies and for lining the author and publisher's pockets. Among "the period's richest funds of data erotica and pornography permeated the culture.and the 18th century bookshop" Pettit and Spedding. Works operating under the thin guises of travel law medicine politics history or religion presented readers across genders with graphic depictions not only of cis-gendered and heterosexual encounters but even more often with scenes that cenered queer polyamorous and female pleasure. In the case of Collection of Travels Derrick used preexisting popular travel narratives as the backdrop for his main work: depicting sexual behaviors common within London's sex trade but setting them within exotic locales. Within volume I for example his explorers encounter "the prostitution of the women of Camul and their hospitable reception of strangers" "the common use of women" in Thebet rites of "marriages of the people of Servia" and the "wives and concubines" of Constantinople including how they are valued how virginity is tried and how they are punished. The second volume builds on this including such content as the "courtezans of Persia" the "women lewd" of Turkey and "the usage of their wives" in Algiers. Given his own appreciation for the power of the sex workers in his own life -- notably Lucy Cooper Kitty Fisher and Charlotte Hayes -- he also includes a section on "the authority of the women in this country" of the Congo. <br /> <br /> One of Derrick's few stand-alone multi-volume works to be published and a rarity in the collecting areas of erotic literature and travel fiction. <br /> <br /> ESTC T135777. He was friends with Eric Stanton whom he met at illustrator's school and soon became a contributor to underground publishers Irving Klaw Edward Mishkin Stanley Malkin and the Sturman brothers. 27048401Japan n.d. ca 1830-40's. Three prints two from an erotic book each in 2 parts: 20.5 x 14; 3rd is 19 x 14 cm. and is probably a later work from about the Meiji period or 1880's. The first two are slightly discoloredthe last one is clean. . . . THREE ORIGINAL COLOR WOODBLOCK EROTIC PRINTS . . . The first two prints are from what is probably the same erotic book Shunpon both show a couple engaged in love-making. Each has text and comments of the lovers while engaged in love-making. . One pair of pages are re-backed the other not they are from about the 1830-40's. . The third item is newer and quite clean. It shows a couple under a Kimono while the man caresses her vagina. This is probably a Meiji work from about 1870-80's. Its quite clean and bright with good image. . All are tipped on to a hand-made Washi paper backing sheet which is 17 x 20 cm. . Good examples from the "Shunga" erotic woodblock prints genre. . . unknown

Modern full black calf and triangle-shaped red morocco onlays raised bands gilt stamping upper cover with gilt central "rod and birch" motif all edges gilt marbled endleaves hand bound by Martin Frost with his gilt-stamped monogram label on rear board. Red cloth thumb-hold slip-case. Fine. "THE ALLURE OF THE WHIP!" With a splendid fore-edge painting showing a pair of horse or carriage riders "riding" their partners back-sides prominently showing in the spirit of Thomas Rowlandson and in this case like Martin Frost who often displays a remarkable sense of humor and the exotic for artistry. Frost's signed book label mounted as a bookplate in front dated 2007. The artist is playing with us by making the trees into the shape of a phallus all of them!. Painting also signed "MF". Frost himself describes this as "A Rowlandesque road scene of travelers 'whipping up' themselves as well as their mounts!" / This is one of the early efforts of MF to bind and paint the book himself. Some spotting and foxing some repaired tears.<br /> Erotic art - in letters and pictures - is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China where lovemaking was considered as a natural practice a sacred duty for both men and women. <br /><br />Albums with explicit drawings were often made for newly married couples as an instruction handbook. Here however the two scenes are rather unconventional illustrating polygamy practices that dominated aristocratic circles in the ancient Chinese society. The first watercolour shows not without a hint of humour two women engaged in a lovemaking game with a man. The first scene shows a very young couple preparing to make love. 2. The next is of a young girl using a dildo while a male lover looks on with erect penis. 3. The third shows a girl sitting on her lover's knee as he fondles her vulva. 4. Next shows a couple engaging in love-making in the garden as the girl sits facing her lover. The genitals are shown where engaged. 5. Two girls prepare to engage in love-making. They are both on a sofa one reclines holds a bronze mirror while the other girl holds her lover's right leg up. Both share looking into the mirror to see the erotic scene some mild discoloration on her hip & face. 6. Shows a couple in the garden while the girl rests her face on her arm on a rock bending over exposing her posterior while her lover enters from the rear and holds her fast. 7. A couple are seated the man first then the woman sits upon his lap as she holds up one knee for deep penetration. 8. While the mistress sleeps on her bed in the background the master unsatisfied pulls the servant girl to his exposed penis. She resists. 9. A lovely garden scene shows the couple with the man holding the girl by the shoulder as they hug each other. 10. In the garden girl holds a fan while she awaits her lover who sends away a young girl so they may begin their love-making. 11. While standing in a shallow stream the master exposes his erect penis while the girl pulls him toward her showing him her exposed vulva as they both hold up their gowns giving view to their genitals. 12. A couple on a blanket with the man in the superior position as he mounts her while she entwines her legs around him holding him fast. 13. A garden scene shows a man on a wall as he "dallies" with a young maid-girl who reaches up to touch his hands likely to help him down. Probably a secret meeting with his young lover. 14. Shows a beautiful woman at an open gate while her lover passes by she flashes an enticing look his way. He turns his head towards her he is accompanied by a young servant- girl who carries his lute as he passes with his fan and gives her a good look. 15. The last is a view of the male-scholar as he sits at his desk and books while looking out a large round window at the girl. She is wearing a lovely saffron robe likely exposing her posterior to him in an inviting sexy stance. All of these lovely paintings show the most pleasant and joyful expressions on the face and especially in the eyes and lips. Books of this subject style are vintage are scarce. The Chinese had a very naturalistic view and open attitude toward sex during this period. Love-making and erotic scenes of this subject were drawn in the most natural ways. People are shown with very pleasant "Yin & Yang" looks between men and women and the act of "Clouds & Rain" love-making are done with pleasant and enjoyable expressions BINDING: The work is period bound and mounted with silk each painting is on silk. The accordion folded book is bound in hard-wood covers. Nicely executed mounted & bound in the traditional Chinese style. On the opposite pages to the paintings is a lovely hand-made gold-flecked Chinese papery. A wonderful example of the best of Chinese painting and bookbinding art form. . unknown

The photographs are housed in a 4-7/8 inch wide by 7-1/2 inch high tan printed envelope with a lengthy enticing title printed on one side of the envelope. The roughly opened & soiled envelope is chipped with tears along the top and wear to the edges. An erotic hand painted color scroll 12 individual scenes each painting ca. 21.5 x 15 cm. overall width is 18 cm. in very clean pristine condition external phoenix cloth inside dark blue silk mounting jade ends. This work is an excerpt from the Chinese erotic novel the Chin P'ing Mei written during the Ming dynasty. It depicts the sexual exploits of the hero Hsi-men and is China's most famous classic novel of erotica. This lovely hand scroll illustrates twelve erotic scenes with Hsi-men and his willowy female consorts. Sapphicsm a common theme but this example shows the hero engaged in a host of sexual pleasures. He adores the vulva and her tiny "Lotus-hooks" or bound feet. In one superb view he is embraced by three lovely paramours as he attempts to gratify each with his tender touch. In another sensual scene while his "jade stick" pierces and ravishes an old favorite a younger concubine is voyeuring at them with desire as we see her pink-flushed face as she masturbates with relish. Several other marvelous paintings show various positions employed for mutual benefit. Each scene is done in the Ming dynasty style with lovely furniture and furnishings graphically illustrated including scholar's desk items scrolls brushes vases flowers & other period objects. Executed in fine color brush work mounted with silk borders paper mounted some 3 meters plus long embellished with pale jade end pieces. BIBLIOGRAPHY: R. H.
