The first edition of this very scarce work.Illustrated with a chromolithographic title page and twelve lithographic plates. These plates are produced by Day & Son 'lithographer to the Queen' after the work of French historical painter Pierre-Antoine Labouchere.The plates are accompanied by letterpress descriptions by the Swiss Protestant minister and historian of the Reformation Jean-Henri Merle d'Aubigne. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Tide marks to head of front board. Joints starting with boards tender. Cloth at back strip head detaching. Lacking free endpapers. Internally binding failed due to gutta percha. Small closed tears and chipping to page perimeters. Pages generally bright with foxing to title page and spotting throughout. 1815620L17Paris: Tardieu Denesle 1815. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5". None. Three volumes of Francoise d'Aubigne's letters. The Marquise de Maintenon was King Louis XIV's second wife. The second edition of these letters. Frontispiece of Maintenon to volume I. Being volumes I II and III only of this four volume set. This work is essentially a critical edition of Madame de Maintenon's works. Over five thousand letters by the Marquise survived and these volumes cast a glimpse over a selection. Maintenon writes of many ethical issues especially on virtue and vice. Philosophy of education was another important subject she often wrote on. During her lifetime she founded the Maison royale de Saint-Louis a school for girls from poorer noble families. Despite never being considered Queen Consort of France she was incredibly influential in court and these letters are between several eminent people in seventeenth and eighteenth century France. Individuals written to in these letters include Madame de Dangeau Mme de Caylus Mme de Ventadour. L'Abbe Gobelin and many more. Most individuals within this correspondence have a brief biography to the start of their section. Lacking volume IV. A fascinating insight into the court of Louis XIV and of a prominent and active political figure. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally rubbed to the spines. Loss to head and tail of all spines worse to the tail of volume I. Both joints to volume I are cracked. Cracks to the front joints of volumes II and III. Hinges to all volumes are strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedowns Peter Leigh. Their inscription to the verso of front endpaper to volume I. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. Octavo 5 volumes. Bound in three quarters contemporary black calf over olive green boards gilt titles and tooling to the spine raised tooled bands marbled endpapers all edges marbled engraved frontispiece portrait of Martin Luther with tissue guard present. In very good condition with Millard Fillmore's ownership inscription and library catalog notes on the title page of each volume "Millard Fillmore March 26 1857 Rebound April 16 1860" who has also crossed out the "J-5" bookshelf designation replacing it with "G-1" in pencil. An exceptional piece of American history from the President who created the White House Library. The 12th Vice President United States Millard Fillmore was elevated to the presidency in 1850 by the death of President Zachary Taylor. Born into relative poverty in upstate New York he became a prominent lawyer and politician in the Buffalo area and a Whig as the party formed in the 1830s in opposition to the policies of Andrew Jackson. During the American Civil War Fillmore was critical of Lincoln's war policies and openly denounced secession asserting that the Union must be maintained by force if necessary. As President he was instrumental in passing the Compromise of 1850 which led to a brief truce in the conflict between slave and free states which divided the Union and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act which provided for the return of slaves who escaped from one state into another territory.
