2010ABE-4544010124392107293Faber & Faber 2010 Louis MacNeice is increasingly recognised as one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century and his work has been a defining influence upon a generation of Irish poets that includes Derek Mahon Michael Longley and Paul Muldoon. The Selected Letters is indispensable as a resource for an understanding of the intellectual culture of the mid-twentieth century. A Classics don poet playwright and globetrotting BBC producer the medley and blend of MacNeice s cultural influences seems exemplary in its modernity. He kept up a significant correspondence with E. R. Dodds Anthony Blunt and T. S. Eliot to name but three prominent figures of the time. During his time at the BBC MacNeice witnessed many key events including the partition of India in 1947 and the independence of the Gold Coast from Britain in 1957 and these are recorded in two long sequences to his wife the singer Hedli Anderson. 2010ABE-15019592016University of California Press 2010 "When editors at the University of California Press pondered the possible demand for Autobiography of Mark Twain a four-pound 500000-word doorstopper of a memoir they kept their expectations modest with a planned print run of 7500 copies. Now it is a smash hit across the country landing on best-seller lists and going back to press six times for a total print run so far of 275000. The publisher cannot print copies quickly enough leaving some bookstores and online retailers stranded without copies just as the holiday shopping season begins ." 2022ABE-1677168016274Hazel Press England 2022 An exquisite book. The twelve gorgeous photographs by Norman McBeath are accompanied by a text by De Waal. The musical term perdendosi almost always comes at the end of a piece and directs sound rhythm and tone to gradually fade and die away. After the leaves have fallen we return To a plain sense of things wrote Wallace Stevens. Perdendosi is a collaborative work by photographer Norman McBeath with ceramicist artist and writer Edmund de Waal. It is a study of leaves at the stage of their transformation when they have lost all colour and become more like parchment than plant taking up the most extraordinary shapes giving the leaves unique identities and character. Many of the photographs were taken at the start of the pandemic in a time of daily news of increasing deaths and infections. Although not a direct response this time had a profound influence on how Norman McBeath saw the leaves. Edmund de Waal s accompanying text Twelve Leaves which he describes as both autobiography and a journal of reading is his own unique and moving response to living with these images for several months during lockdown. With a heightened awareness and increased sensitivity towards the natural world Perdendosi offers a fresh perspective on the familiar. The book is bound in French flaps and the entire production has been carefully done to limit any environmental harm. Printed at The Lavenham Press Suffolk. This production will never be a best seller of course; that is not its purpose. But it is in its small way a gorgeous and quietly aesthetic book. 1st Edition. Soft cover. New/New. Hazel Press England paperback

2007ABE-1621158591696Sourcebooks Mediafusion USA 2007 Quite rare in the UK. A splendid anthology with a set of three CDs of poets reading their own work. Included are the voices of three poets from the 19thC. Tennyson Browning Whitman all from around 1888 and perhaps the first recordings of poets. They were recorded by Eddison and allowances must be made for the poor quality. The bulk of the recordings benefit from improved technology of course. This generously produced book is worthy to be on any poetry lover's shelf. FIRST PRINTING of the first edition near fine with no annotations or signs of use. The recordings are loose laid in a folder and they are utterly fascinating. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Sourcebooks Mediafusion USA hardcover
