1950MOD12-D-10New York: The Viking Press 1950. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8" by 5.5". None. The first edition of this novel from Pulitzer winner John Steinbeck. First edition first printing. 'Burning Bright' was written as an experiment with producing a play in novel format. Rather than providing only the dialogue and brief stage directions as would be expected in a play Steinbeck fleshes out the scenes with details of both the characters and the environment. The intention was to allow the play to be read by the non-theatrical reader while still allowing the dialogue to be lifted and performed with little adaptation by acting companies. In a grey cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally generally smart with just some slight shelfwear. Dustwrapper is sound though with some edgewear and handling marks. Internally firmly bound. Ink signature to front free-endpaper. Pages are generally bright and clean aside from a few patches of foxing. Very Good The Viking Press hardcover

Original tan cloth over boards red lettering on cover and spine orange dye on top edges bookseller's ticket on rear paste-down endpaper very minor foxing to edges otherwise in near fine condition. Goldstone & Payne A29aThe form of this book is a "play-novelette" which is a play that is easy to read or a short novel that can be played. Steinbeck used this method experimentally in "Of Mice and Men" and "The Moon is Down" but this book is a more complete attempt at this form. While this book was not critically acclaimed Steinbeck as always is a very vivid writer and bring his four characters to life in this play concerned with the timeless themes of love jealousy friendship and the desire to have a child The Viking Press hardcover

Reference: Goldstone and Payne John Steinbeck: A Bibliographical Catalogue A22b. ~TT~ 1.5P A first edition copy of an important novel by 1962 Nobel laureate John Steinbeck 1902-1968. Published in 1945 it is set during the Great Depression in Monterey California on a street lined with sardine canneries that is known as Cannery Row. The story revolves around the people living there: Lee Chong the local grocer; Doc a marine biologist; and Mack the leader of a group of derelict people. The actual Monterey location Steinbeck was writing about known casually as Ocean View Avenue was later renamed 'Cannery Row' in honor of the book. A film version was released in 1982 and a stage version was produced in 1995. Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is - both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. John Steinbeck draws on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey and interweaves their stories in this world where only the fittest survive - creating what is at once one of his most humorous and poignant works. In this work John Steinbeck returns to the setting of Tortilla Flat to create another evocative portrait of life as it is lived by those who unabashedly put the highest value on the intangibles - human warmth camaraderie and love.
