1971213071971. Single volume anthology paperback. New York: New American Library 1971. First edition. A groundbreaking anthology exploring the evolution of Chicano identity in American literature The Chicano: From Caricature to Self-Portrait brings together short stories by an eclectic mix of Anglo and Chicano writers charting a literary journey from stereotypes to self-actualization. Edited and introduced by Edward Simmen this collection highlights the "pain and promise of the Mexican-American experience" offering invaluable insight into how Mexican-Americans or Chicanos asserted their cultural identity and grappled with the forces of assimilation discrimination and pride.

Contributors include renowned Anglo writers such as John Steinbeck Jack London and Ray Bradbury whose works reflect shifting attitudes toward Mexican-American characters as well as Chicano authors like Nick C. Vaca Philip D. Ortega and Genaro González who assert a vibrant and authentic voice in literature. Notably this volume represents the first collection of its kind marking an essential step in the representation and understanding of Mexican-American life within a broader literary and social context. The back cover emphasizes the significance of the term "Chicano" reclaimed as a badge of pride by the Mexican-American community in their struggle for cultural affirmation during the civil rights era. With stories ranging from 19th-century sentimental stereotypes to the unflinching self-portraits of contemporary Chicano authors the anthology underscores the trajectory of a people moving from marginalization to self-determination. This copy is in very good condition with light wear to the edges and corners of the orange-toned wraps. Spine creasing is visible but does not compromise structural integrity. Pages are lightly toned but unmarked save for a small crease on the upper right of the front cover. Overall a solid copy of a highly influential work in Chicano literature and history. unknown
