The written prospectus is bound in burgundy wraps with a cover printed on handmade paper with silk stitched binding. Text on heavy rough-cut stock includes illustrations by Karin Wikstrom and is four pages long. Laid in are: a two page letter dated October 18 1991 and signed by the Press' owners Carolyn and James Robertson; an order form with return envelope; and a color photograph of the soon to be released book. With the original typed transmittal letter signed by Turner and addressed to Elaine reminding her of their meeting at a party in Key West and commenting about the chapter on her late husband in the present volume. Turner's Spirit of Place is devoted to nine great American authors each chapter describing the artist in the place he or she made special: Mark Twain in Hannibal; William Faulkner in the Mississippi delta; and George W. Very rare. </strong></p><p>This unusual illustrated edition was published specifically for young readers.<br />It includes: '<em>Strawberry Ice Cream Soda'</em> by <strong>Shaw</strong> from his first story collection '<em>Sailor Off the Bremen'</em>; a part of the novella '<em>The Red Pony'</em> by <strong>John Steinbeck</strong>; '<em>Big Two-Hearted River'</em> and '<em>A Day's Wait'</em> by <strong>Ernest Hemingway;</strong> excerpts from '<em>Paul Bunyan'</em> by J<strong>ames Stevens;</strong> and two stories by <strong>Erskine Caldwell</strong>.<br />The illustrations are by <strong>Tatiana Mavrina</strong> Lebedeva; 1900/1902–1996 a graduate of VKHUTEMAS. She was a member of '<em>Group 13'</em> an association of graphic artists founded in 1929. Like many Russian avant-garde artists of her generation she turned to children's book illustration in the 1930s as a means of artistic expression that allowed her to avoid political repression during the Stalin era. Despite enduring hunger and hardship during WWII in Moscow her illustrations remained tender vibrant and full of life.
