Second edition originally published under the slightly different title Famous Recipes of Famous People and issued by the Hotel del Monte without Sunset Magazine in 1936. A compilation of celebrity recipes with the recipes attributed to the famous including: Gertrude Stein John Steinbeck Walt Disney J. Edgar Hoover Rube Goldberg and many others. Also includes a section of recipes of well-known chefs of the day with a bias toward California Hotels and the west in general as well as a short section of recipes from the Hotel Del Monte. The playful illustrations by Sinclair Ross alternately reference Hollywood and the frontier West. Endpapers reproduce the autographs of many of the celebrities featured in the book. Publisher's gilt-decorated cream-colored boards near fine. In clean and bright yellow dust jacket printed in blue and orange but with several good-sized chips to the front and rear panels. JD28137first edition. n.p. 20th Century-Fox 1940 first edition. <br/><br/> A complete set of 11X14-inch color lobby card posters for the original release of this classic story and classic film which was directed by the famed John Ford and which starred Henra Fonda as Tom Joad Jane Darwell as Ma Joad and John Carradine as Casy the set also includes its original printed housing envelope which is probably even more scarce than the posters the fragile housing envelope is plain brown and is printed with the film title Steinbeck's name Fonda's name etc. none of these posters were in the Adrian H. Goldstone collection but see Goldstone & Payne E6 not recorded by Morrow extremely scarce especially as a complete set and with the housing envelope. While there are pin holes in some corners from theatre mounting as usual these posters are uniformly clean bright and fine. unknown books

John Steinbeck 1902-1968 considered "a giant of American letters" was best known for his portrayals of families in California often exploring themes of alienation and injustice through "everyman" characters n. b. info from Wikipedia. "Flight" is a short story originally published in the collection "The Long Valley" on the subject of manhood as the protagonist Pepe strives to fill his father's place. While in town he kills a man and must fllee and his subsequent trials reveal that Pepe is not only "trying to live up to the foolish and romantic ideal of manhood common to his kind but is one of the incarnations of Everyman pursuing the ideals that foolish or not. . .in the end give him stature and dignity" per the afterword. <br/><br/>Wallace Stegner 1909-1993 provides an afterword for this edition. Stegner was often called "The Dean of Western Writers"; he was a member of the faculty at Stanford University and founded its creative writing program. The Stegner Fellowship program at Stanford was named in his honour and he is a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977. In the afterword Stegner analyses the themes and characters in the story in the context of Steinbeck's other work as well as the literary movement at the time.<br/><br/>Included in this publication by The Yolla Bolly Press are woodcuts by Swedish artist Karin Wikstrom b. 1959 who has contributed illustrations for several other Press editions including "The Inland Whale" by Theodora Kroeber and "Zapata" by John Steinbeck.
