1950MOD12-D-10New York: The Viking Press 1950. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8" by 5.5". None. The first edition of this novel from Pulitzer winner John Steinbeck. First edition first printing. 'Burning Bright' was written as an experiment with producing a play in novel format. Rather than providing only the dialogue and brief stage directions as would be expected in a play Steinbeck fleshes out the scenes with details of both the characters and the environment. The intention was to allow the play to be read by the non-theatrical reader while still allowing the dialogue to be lifted and performed with little adaptation by acting companies. In a grey cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally generally smart with just some slight shelfwear. Dustwrapper is sound though with some edgewear and handling marks. Internally firmly bound. Ink signature to front free-endpaper. Pages are generally bright and clean aside from a few patches of foxing. Very Good The Viking Press hardcover

Goldstone & Payne A29aThe form of this book is a "play-novelette" which is a play that is easy to read or a short novel that can be played. Steinbeck used this method experimentally in "Of Mice and Men" and "The Moon is Down" but this book is a more complete attempt at this form. While this book was not critically acclaimed Steinbeck as always is a very vivid writer and bring his four characters to life in this play concerned with the timeless themes of love jealousy friendship and the desire to have a child The Viking Press hardcover

In the Foreword Steinbeck writes his reasons for writing in this format - play-novellette: "I find it difficult to read plays and in this I do not find myself alone. The printed play is read almost exclusively by people closely associated with the theater by students of the theater and by the comparatively small group of readers who are passionately fond of the theater. .this will be more widely read because it is presented as ordinary fiction. The story is structured like a play divided into acts and it follows Joe Saul an older man yearning for a child to carry on his legacy. His wife Mordeen loves him deeply but faces challenges due to Joe's emotional struggles. This leads to morally complex decisions that intertwine with other characters' lives such as Victor and Friend Ed. The title reflects the inner passions and conflicts that drive the characters-life's burning intensity and the struggle for fulfillment. Steinbeck's approach blending prose with theatrical dialogue gives the novella a distinctive tone and invites readers to reflect on the deeper questions of existence.
