196122615London: Heinemann Ltd 1961. A first edition first printing of 'The Winter of our Discontent' by John Steinbeck published by Heinemann Ltd in 1961. A very good copy in burgundy bound cloth boards with gilt title to the spine blind stamped with Heinemann logo to rear panel free from internal inscriptions with slight pushing to the head and foot of the spine and to upper edge of front board and rear panel mild browning to the text block and spotting to the top edge with horizontal staining to fore-edge. A very good clipped wrapper with very slight wear and chipping to the spine tips pushing to the upper edge of front panel and pushing to the knuckles of the front and rear flap folds some fading to the spine and mild handling wear to rear panel. The Winter of our discontent is Steinbeck's last novel and centres around the theme of the effects of societal pressure. Regarded as a classic the novel led to Steinbeck being award the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. A television movie was made in 1983 staring Donald Sutherland in the title role. Square tight and clean throughout with little or no wear. Perhaps a touch of softness to heel. Board edges mildly toned. Very attractive unclipped dust jacket $4.50 has some tiny nicks to the spine ends and a couple of closed tears that have been repaired with clear tape on the reverse. Mild toning to spine panel and flap folds. Still fresh and bright and presents quite well. A very pretty collectable copy at a great price. The Viking Press hardcover

196126915New York: The Viking Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1961. 1st Edition limited. Hardcover. a nice copy of the Limited Edition see notes including the original clear acetate jacket cover with "LIMITED EDITION" printed in red; minimal shelfwear to the book; the jacket is nice and clean with a bit of wear and a handful of tiny nicks along the top edge essentially the result of having been slightly mis-aligned on the book for many years; the acetate overwrap is in Very Good condition with a teensy bit of shrinking over time and one small crack/tear at the lower right front corner. Steinbeck's last novel this being the "Limited Edition" stated on a tipped-in page as having been limited to 500 copies "specially printed and bound for friends of the author and the publisher." NOTE that I have placed a new clear mylar jacket protector easily removable if desired over the acetate wraparound primarily to protect the small tear from inadvertently catching on something and expanding itself. .
