First Edition, [2], 73, [1] pp., with the circular stamp of the "Birmingham Law Society" on the title and foremargins soiled, disbound. Attributed to Thomas Wise. A reissue of this first edition was published in the same year, with a new title-page and final leaf, and has the imprint "London: Printed in the Year, 1744." A second edition was also printed in 1744. Rare, ESTC locating 3 copies in UK and 3 in North America; Kress, 4739; Goldsmith, 8068.
3 vols., 4to., Sole Edition thus, with an engraved portrait frontispiece and an engraved portrait, some moderate (but largely marginal) damp-marking to first volume; second and third volumes in contemporary full calf, backs with five raised bands, neatly rebacked in calf to style, first volume in modern full calf to style, new leather labels gilt, a very good, crisp, firm set . With the list of subscribers, and additional list of subscribers, together totalling only some 170 names including those of Daines Barrington (friend, correspondent of Gilbert White) Edmund Burke, David Garrick and General Charles Lee. The list of subscribers in interesting; excluding the nobility the list demonstrates a wide coverage of the social and professional classes, and six women are listed which seems a healthy proportion for the period. One subscriber's name, that of 'Estcourt Cheswell' has the surname neatly amended in a contemporary hand to read 'Creswell'. Although there are no other indications as to individual ownership, this may have been his copy. As late as 1791 Creswell was a freeholder of the county of Gloucestershire resident near Cirencester. Marvell's 'Works', containing Poems, Satires and a few Letters, were first edited by Cooke (2 vols., 1726; reprinted 1772). To these are now added the Prose Works, further Letters, including those to the Corporation of Hull (which Marvell represented in Parliament) and the majority of his pamphlets. Thompson's 'Life' appears here for the first time. The most complete early collection of Marvell's poetry and prose, elegantly and clearly printed and with broad margins. CBEL: I, p.460.

After serving as rabbi of Har Sinai Congregation, Baltimore, from 1884 to 1888, Philipson returned to Cincinnati to become rabbi of the B'nai Israel Congregation in 1888, remaining there for the rest of his life. Philipson participated in the conference which drew up the Pittsburgh Platform (1885); he was a rounder of the Central Conference of American Rabbis serving as president in 190709; and he was an influential figure in Hebrew Union College, where he taught for many years, and in the Union of American Hebrew Congregations .He was a member of the board of translators of the Jewish Publication Society for the translation of the Holy Scriptures (1916), an editor of Selected Writings of Isaac M. Wise (1900), and translator of Reminiscences of Isaac M. Wise (1901, 1945). An autobiography, My Life as an American Jew, appeared in 1942 and a volume of occasional writings, Centenary Papers, in 1919. Delizioso, graffiante pamphlet attribuito a Gregorio Leti (cfr. Librinlinea, Biblioteche Piemontesi On Line), nonchè anche al terribile Ferrante Pallavicino (1615-1644). Sei esemplari censiti in SBN. First edition, half-title, [4], 99, [1]pp., disbound, half-title detached. A former officer in the East India Company's armies and Commander in Chief of the Great Mogul's Forces, Major John Morrison, returned to Britain in 1772 styled as 'Commander in Chief of the Great Mogul's forces'. Morrison was regarded as a traitor by the East India Company but he did succeed in publishing a pamphlet entitled "The Advantage of an Alliance with the Great Mogul" in 1774. Positioning himself alongside advocates of direct Crown control over Indian territories, Morrison suggested that Shah Alam II would be willing to cede Bengal to George III. The emperor's rough treatment at the hands of the Company, especially the non-payment of tribute, was lambasted as 'a dishonourable blow to the law of nations'. A proper agreement between kings would restore 'the stability and dignity of regal government', and replace 'the fluctuating and unsteady resolve of a Company of private men'. First edition, [4], 5-25pp., advertisement leaf at end, disbound. Describes the manner of recruiting by the British Army by crimping (similar to naval press-ganging), and describes it as little more than slavery. The author quotes from legal and other sources and cites examples of the problems associated with this manner of recruitment. He emphasizes the idea that an enslaved or forced soldier is not likely to be a good soldier, describes how wealth or education was not a protection against impressment and several other factors affecting the military services. Goldsmith, 16436.

Cologne (ma: stampato in Olanda), chez Pierre Marteau, 1695, in-12, piena pelle marmorizzata coeva, dorso a 5 nervi con titolo e fregi (perdita della doratura) negli scomparti, tagli spruzzati, pp. (12), 436. Frontespizio in rosso e nero, fregi in xilografia.
