Christoffel Plantijn werd de grootste drukker en uitgever van Europa en vervulde daardoor een sleutelrol in de Renaissance, de Reformatie en het vroege Europese kapitalisme. Plantijn was een multinational avant la lettre. Op het hoogtepunt van zijn loopbaan had hij ruim twintig drukpersen in zijn bedrijf staan; andere bekende Europese drukkers beschikten slechts over twee of drie persen. Beroemde schrijvers en wetenschappers wisten hun weg te vinden naar de drukkerij van Plantijn.
