In 1975 verscheen b.g.v. het 550-jarig bestaan van de universiteit van Leuven een groots opgezette geschiedschrijving, inclusief de geschiedenis van de gebouwen, de bibliotheek en het studentenleven. De nieuwe editie van dit gedenkboek is met nieuw onderzoek verbeterd en aangevuld met een vierde deel over de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven na het vertrek van de franstaligen in 1968. De grootste universiteit van Belgie was vanaf 1425 tot de oprichting van de universiteit van Leiden in 1574 de enige universiteit in de toenmalige Nederlanden. Van 1817-1830, toen Belgie met Nederland verenigd was, werd zij rijksuniversiteit. In 1834 werd door de Belgische bisschoppen een franstalige Katholieke Universiteit opgericht, die als een van de staat onafhankelijke instelling aansloot bij de middeleeuwse Alma Mater. Ook in de Nieuwe Wereld en andere overzeese gebieden van de Spaanse en Portugese kroon werd uiteraard kennis verspreid. Daarbij speelden Plantin-Moretus en andere Antwerpse drukkerijen een belangrijke rol. Hun aanbod aan boeken en prenten was zeer divers: behalve om religieuze ging het ook om historische en etnografische werken. Meer nog: ook natuurwetenschappelijke en mathematische kennis, en zelfs technische knowhow voor vestingbouw, werd uitgevoerd naar de kolonies. De invloed daarvan in de veroverde gebieden is niet te onderschatten.
