The Duke of Hamilton had collected a remarkable series of mediaeval manuscripts, mainly illuminated, at an early age. This collection was purchased, for ?70,000, by the Prussian government. Because of the high cost of the collection, it was decided to sell a portion of it, hence this memorable sale which included the purple vellum codex of the Gospels presented by Henry VIII to Pope Leo X; it was bought by Quaritch for ?1500, sold to Theodore Irwin, of Oswego, and re-sold, in 1900, to Mr Pierpont Morgan.

In 2006, 500 years after his death, the Royal Library of Belgium organised an exhibition revealing treasures from the era of Philip the Fair (1478-1506), last duke of Burgundy. Les fonds importants constitueront un volume, les fonds moins importants seront regroupes. Chaque manuscrit sera decrit selon une grille uniforme, comprenant la cote,le titre et/ou incipit et un courte description du contenu. Ensuite vient la description technique de la reliure. Les fascicules sont illustres des photographies des reliures les plus remarquables. En preparation: bibliotheques de Reims et de Vendome. Les reliures dont ont trouvera ici la description appartiennent a la Bibliotheque municipale d'Autun ou a la Societe Eduenne. Les criteres qui ont preside a leur choix ont ete de diverses natures. Parmi les manuscrits, on trouvera: les reliures anterieures a 1550, ou bien posterieures a cette date mais evidemment archaisantes, et l'on fait allusion ici principalement aux livres liturgiques notes destines au choeur, relies dans la deuxieme moitie du XVI siecle, ou meme au debut du XVIIe siecle; les reliures des manuscrits anterieurs a 1550, relies posterieurement, mais qui conservent encore des elements ou des indices de reliure anterieurs a cette date. Parmi les imprimes, ont ete retenus les incunables dont la reliure est anterieure a 1550. les reliures de manuscrits medievaux et d'incunables n'entrant pas dans ces categories, apparaitront cependant avec la mention de l'epoque de leur fabrication et, pour les incunables, des references qui permettront de les identifier. Les fragments cotes ont ete completement elimines. 290 reliures font ainsi l'objet d'une notice, 166 reliures de manuscrits et 124 reliures d'incunables.

With advertisement front endpapers in sepia and 11pp of similar advertisements at end. 'All About Cookery' (first issued under this title in 1871) is a derivative of Isabella Beeton's final work 'The Dictionary of Cookery'. The 'Dictionary' was first published in 1865 and designed to full the gap between her classic (but highly-priced) 'Book of Household Management' and the cheaper 'Cookery'. A key feature of the work is the arrangement of its subject matter - recipes, menus, implements and so on - in alphabetical order for easy reference. It is her only work so presented and to our belief the first compilation of its kind. The Edwardian editions are particularly comprehensive in their scope and coverage. See Driver, p.101 and our own bibliography (in progress). Cagle 563 cites the 1903 edition with fewer plates.

The medieval English West Midlands has long been associated with the production of vernacular texts, in Old and Middle English, and with the making of several famous manuscripts. The aim of this volume is to re-think assumptions about medieval literature and the region in the light of new research in medieval book history. A series of specially commissioned essays in 'manuscript geography' examines the making and use of texts and books in relation to cultural networks in the region and beyond. Included are case studies of manuscripts of Worcester and the Worcester diocese from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries; investigations of manuscript production in fourteenth-century Shropshire and its wider regional links; and essays on textual cultures in Warwickshire from the activities of the aristocrats and gentry of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries to the projects of later antiquarians. Essays in the final section of the volume reflect on the possibilities of large-scale, corpus-based research on medieval manuscript books. Collectively the essays identify and explore some of the investments of traditional regionalist accounts of vernacular literary culture and model new theoretical and methodological approaches. Kinderen kregen de prenten als beloning voor goede schoolprestaties. Voor volwassenen waren er katholieke heiligenprenten, levenstrappen en allerlei spotprenten. De prenten werden met simpele middelen gedrukt en eventueel handmatig ingekleurd. Ze waren goedkoop en meestal geen lang leven beschoren. Daardoor zijn ze nu zeer zeldzaam. Aan het eind van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw werden ze geleidelijk verdrongen door prentenboeken en strips. Kinderprenten, volksprenten, centsprenten, schoolprenten is een groots opgezet en omvangrijk naslagwerk waarin alle aspecten van deze prenten aan bod komen: van uitgevers en drukkers, productietechnieken en prijzen tot thematiek, censuur, verspreiding en gebruik. Vorstenportretten, de verkeerde wereld, volksfeesten, kermis en vermaak: het is maar een kleine greep uit de onderwerpen die aan bod komen.
