La collection Reliures medievales des bibliotheques de France, dirigee par l'Institut de Recherche et d'Histoire des Textes (CNRS, Paris), a pour objet le repertoriage, par fonds de bibliotheque, des reliures medievales. Les fonds importants constitueront un volume, les fonds moins importants seront regroupes. Chaque manuscrit sera decrit selon une grille uniforme, comprenant la cote,le titre et/ou incipit et un courte description du contenu. Ensuite vient la description technique de la reliure. Les fascicules sont illustres des photographies des reliures les plus remarquables. En preparation: bibliotheques de Reims et de Vendome. Les reliures dont ont trouvera ici la description appartiennent a la Bibliotheque municipale d'Autun ou a la Societe Eduenne. Les criteres qui ont preside a leur choix ont ete de diverses natures. Parmi les manuscrits, on trouvera: les reliures anterieures a 1550, ou bien posterieures a cette date mais evidemment archaisantes, et l'on fait allusion ici principalement aux livres liturgiques notes destines au choeur, relies dans la deuxieme moitie du XVI siecle, ou meme au debut du XVIIe siecle; les reliures des manuscrits anterieurs a 1550, relies posterieurement, mais qui conservent encore des elements ou des indices de reliure anterieurs a cette date. Parmi les imprimes, ont ete retenus les incunables dont la reliure est anterieure a 1550. les reliures de manuscrits medievaux et d'incunables n'entrant pas dans ces categories, apparaitront cependant avec la mention de l'epoque de leur fabrication et, pour les incunables, des references qui permettront de les identifier. Les fragments cotes ont ete completement elimines. 290 reliures font ainsi l'objet d'une notice, 166 reliures de manuscrits et 124 reliures d'incunables.

Folio, x,507,[1]pp., facsimiles throughout (some coloured), orig. cloth. The present volume is compiled by Lotte Hellinga with contributions by Paul Needham, Margaret Nickson and John Goldfinch. It includes descriptions of 323 copies of books, representing 221 editions of items printed in England, out of a total of 395 known to date, extensive introductions and 52 full-size plates accompanying the descriptions of printing types. Since the appearance in 1908 of the first volume of BMC the work has been relied on as one of the main authorities on the earliest printing in Europe. Its coverage of early printing from the European countries in which the new technique was successively introduced provides not only extensive bibliographical descriptions, but introduces the material with an analysis of the development of printing in the relevant areas. The guiding theme throughout the earlier volumes is the spread of printing in the fifteenth century as reflected in the British Museum Library's outstanding collection. England is the last volume to appear in this momentous series.

The Duke of Hamilton had collected a remarkable series of mediaeval manuscripts, mainly illuminated, at an early age. This collection was purchased, for ?70,000, by the Prussian government. Because of the high cost of the collection, it was decided to sell a portion of it, hence this memorable sale which included the purple vellum codex of the Gospels presented by Henry VIII to Pope Leo X; it was bought by Quaritch for ?1500, sold to Theodore Irwin, of Oswego, and re-sold, in 1900, to Mr Pierpont Morgan.

A copy held by Nottingham University Library has a manuscript tipped-in note "describing the library, and how Maittaire, the 3rd Duke's tutor, selected many works from the Harleian Library." Sold with this 5 volume set is a copy of the rare first edition of the second part ([4] 163, [1]pp., orig. boards), it was published in 1820 by the Caledonian Mercury Press, Edinburgh, but the majority of the copies were destroyed in a fire at the premises of the publisher in 1820; The second edition was published in 1826. The Society of Writers to His Majesty's Signet was appointed funds, in the year 1755, to purchase Law Books for the use of members. From 1778 the best editions of books in other departments of Literature were added, with a view to the formation of a general Library. Works of Law, History, Belles Lettres, Sciences and Arts are all represented. First edition, first issue, without the index which was printed at a later date. A contemporary printed label on the upper cover alludes to the fact "The Members of the Society are requested not to bind their Copies of the Catalogue, till the Alphabetical Index, which is at present preparing, be delivered." Provenance: Bookplate of "The Hope Trust, 31 Moray Place, Edinburgh" to front paste-down.
First edition, royal 8vo (245 x 155 mm), xix, [1], 308, [2, advert]pp., large paper copy with the additional 42 facsimile plates, cont. half vellum lightly soiled, marbled boards, small tears to upper joint, green morocco spine label lettered in gilt. The manuscript library offered a wonderful range of unpublished material in every field of research, described here at considerable length. Included in the autograph letters was a very important collection of royal letters and interesting state papers, chiefly relating to the affairs of Scotland, 1538-1700. The Medieval MSS included the Glastonbury Cartulary, and a 15th Century Histoire de la Bible with 109 miniatures. Madden acquired the famous extra-illustrated Blomefield for ?460 for the BM as well as securing a considerable number of important MSS. The total sum realised was ?6,558.8.0.
