Figgins had issued specimens as early as 1792, but these were in small pamphlet form. By the 1820s they were issuing specimens in a 8vo book form, these were followed by quarto specimens in the early 1840s. "The Quarto Specimen Book was supplemented in 1847 by the 'Epitome of Specimens,' which contains a selection of antiques, blacks, and jobbing types, with flowers, borders, and ornaments, the book and news founts being shown in small paragraphs."?Bigmore & Wyman. This book was continually added to until 1871, when it became too large and heavy for the post, thereafter the specimens issued by Figgins were issued in a smaller condensed form. The medieval English West Midlands has long been associated with the production of vernacular texts, in Old and Middle English, and with the making of several famous manuscripts. The aim of this volume is to re-think assumptions about medieval literature and the region in the light of new research in medieval book history. A series of specially commissioned essays in 'manuscript geography' examines the making and use of texts and books in relation to cultural networks in the region and beyond. Included are case studies of manuscripts of Worcester and the Worcester diocese from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries; investigations of manuscript production in fourteenth-century Shropshire and its wider regional links; and essays on textual cultures in Warwickshire from the activities of the aristocrats and gentry of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries to the projects of later antiquarians. Essays in the final section of the volume reflect on the possibilities of large-scale, corpus-based research on medieval manuscript books. Collectively the essays identify and explore some of the investments of traditional regionalist accounts of vernacular literary culture and model new theoretical and methodological approaches. Auf ihn gehen sowohl die Texte als auch die Konzeption der detailreichen Kupferstiche zuruck. Die Analyse des Emblembuchs fuhrt Coornhert als einen Kunstler vor Augen, der sich fur seine Argumentation zur richtigen Verwendung des irdischen Besitzes des gesamten Repertoires antiker Topoi, christlicher Exempla, humanistischer Allegorie, aber auch sehr volkstumlicher Sprichworte souveran bedient. Die Quellen fur die Texte und Bilder liegen in der niederlandischen Tradition und sind gepragt von einer Rhetorik, die aus der moralisierenden Bildkultur hervorgegangen ist. Sowohl thematisch als auch in der Anschaulichkeit der genrehaften Bildinszenierungen und im handwerklichen Niveau setzt das Buch neue Massstabe fur die weitere Entwicklung der Emblematik, deren grundlegende Bedeutung fur die europaische Kultur des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts eine oft zitierte Bemerkung von Herder fokussiert, der dieses Zeitalter ???beinahe das emblematische nennen mochte???. Neuer Zustand.
