First edition, large 8vo (234 x 145 mm), viii, 481, [1]pp., frontis., vignette on title, woodcut portraits in the text, recent green buckram, morocco spine label. This famous catalogue, with notes by A.F. Griffiths and prices affixed, includes the rarest books in English Poetry. The collection was originally formed by R. Park, the editor of several bibliographical works. Park disposed of them to Thomas Hill for an annuity. When Mr. Hill's affairs became embarrassed, he sold this portion of his library to Mr. Octavius Gilchrist, a grocer at Stamford. Gilchrist later sold the whole to Longmans, and thus they came to the market, with the present volume as the sale catalogue. Each of the 956 items are described in detail and all are priced. Lowndes says, "This extremely useful catalogue of the rare and curious collection made by R. Park, and added to by Thos. Hill is deserving of a place in every good library, from the interesting information which it affords of the works of our early poets." Provenance: From the library of Prof. T. A. Birrell, a note in pencil to half-title "Ex White Knights, Case 50, Shelf 1." Lowndes I, p.200.

8vo (195 x 125 mm), viii, 164pp., with half-title, original pink boards, rubbed, spine rather chipped, but still a nice uncut copy. First issue of the title page with the 26th instead of the 28th of March as the first day of the sale. An interesting sale of mysterious ownership put together by James Edwards who had already brought the Pinelli books from Venice for sale in London. The additions came from the library of Cardinal de Brienne and from Italy. The sale also contained Aldines which never existed. Renouard in his Annales de Alde suggested that Edwards had purchased these books in Italy and had used the Italian booksellers notes to catalogue them without having seen them personally. The deception created five fictitious Aldines (lot 18, 171, 206, 223 and 526). De Ricci, p. 89; Munby and Coral, p. 90, Arthur Rau, Bibliotheca Parisiana in 'The Book Collector', Autumn, 1969.

Parr hoped that after his death, "the world would then see what sort of a collection of books had been made by a country parson"; hence the publication of this catalogue compiled by Henry Bohn. Bohn was unsuccessful in his attempt to sell the collection en bloc, and it was eventually sold by auction in 1828.
