The Society of Writers to His Majesty's Signet was appointed funds, in the year 1755, to purchase Law Books for the use of members. From 1778 the best editions of books in other departments of Literature were added, with a view to the formation of a general Library. Works of Law, History, Belles Lettres, Sciences and Arts are all represented. First edition, first issue, without the index which was printed at a later date. A contemporary printed label on the upper cover alludes to the fact "The Members of the Society are requested not to bind their Copies of the Catalogue, till the Alphabetical Index, which is at present preparing, be delivered." Provenance: Bookplate of "The Hope Trust, 31 Moray Place, Edinburgh" to front paste-down.
First edition, royal 8vo (245 x 155 mm), xix, [1], 308, [2, advert]pp., large paper copy with the additional 42 facsimile plates, cont. half vellum lightly soiled, marbled boards, small tears to upper joint, green morocco spine label lettered in gilt. The manuscript library offered a wonderful range of unpublished material in every field of research, described here at considerable length. Included in the autograph letters was a very important collection of royal letters and interesting state papers, chiefly relating to the affairs of Scotland, 1538-1700. The Medieval MSS included the Glastonbury Cartulary, and a 15th Century Histoire de la Bible with 109 miniatures. Madden acquired the famous extra-illustrated Blomefield for ?460 for the BM as well as securing a considerable number of important MSS. The total sum realised was ?6,558.8.0.

Paperback, 102pp. ISBN 9789061942283. Jan Evertsen van Doorn was a bookseller and publisher active in Utrecht from about 1610 until his retirement in 1644. In addition to books, he also stocked music editions in a variety of genres, and in 1639 he published a Catalogus Librorum Musicorum listing all the music he had for sale. Though its existence was known through literary sources, Doorn's catalog was long thought to be lost. A copy survives in Paris at the Bibliotheque nationale, however, and is reproduced here in facsimile. In addition to this facsimile, the present volume includes a transcription of the original text with bibliographical annotations inserted. Three excellent indexes, "Composers and Editors," "Printers and Publishers," and "Lost Editions," provide easy and useful access to both the facsimile catalog and its transcription. The publication is graced with an introductory essay by Henri Vanhulst that places both the catalog and its contents in perspective within the musical milieu of their day. The essay codifies the careful and thorough study Vanhulst has obviously devoted to this document. Chief among the essay's most helpful features are six statistical tables that provide information on various aspects of the catalog, including chronologies of domestic and foreign editions, percentages of composers by nationality, and geographical distribution of printers and publishers. New.
