Meme si le fait d'organiser des expositions sur la reliure a decor fait partie de la vocation premiere de la Bibliotheca Wittockiana, ces manifestations ont toujours une raison bien particuliere d'etre. L'idee d'une exposition sur la reliure actuelle en France est nee du malaise ressenti a l'egard de cette reliure a decor, appelee par les uns -reliure d'art- et par les autres -reliure originale-. Ce malaise s'est traduit par un certain desinteret manifeste ces derniers temps, aussi bien par certains relieurs que par certains collectionneurs, libraires ou conservateurs. En rassemblant un choix de quelque cent cinquante reliures a decor creees par vingt-sept relieurs professionnels exercant en France, reliures executees pour la plupart au cours de ces dix dernieres annees, la Bibliotheca Wittockiana pose le probleme d'une eventuelle nouvelle adaptation du relieur-createur devant le livre dont l'habit lui est aujourd'hui confie. Il y a en effet lieu de prendre en consideration l'evolution constante qu'a connue l'edition au cours de ces dernieres decennies : livre de peintre, livre d'artiste, livre-objet, livre conceptuel, livre tout court... La reliure d'art doit-elle completement s'effacer devant le texte ou l'image qu'elle recouvre? Le relieur-createur a-t-il le droit de rivaliser avec le poete ou le peintre? Certes, le dilemme ne date pas d'aujourd'hui, mais la lente metamorphose editoriale reactualise le probleme sur de nouvelles donnees. Par cette exposition, organisee avec le soutien de l'Ambassade de France en Belgique, la Bibliotheca Wittockiana veut donner l'occasion au visiteur de voir comment chaque artiste relieur a releve ce defi.
