"Some of the proceedings described in the following pages seem unjust to us, but we have to remember that these trials took place about 160 years ago. Many important reforms have been introduced both in England and France which have gone far to establish and safeguard the rights of the accused. One aspect has not changed; a criminal trial in France is more dramatic, more akin to the theatre, than in England, both in its setting and in the display of emotion." - from Foreward. 2 Volumes, 245x165mm, 323p, Dutch (NL) edition , Gebonden, luxe uitgave . naslagwerk ! een must ! ISBN 9789461170118. Andy Warhol, Marcel Broodthaers, Anne-mie Van Kerckhoven, Jacques Charlier, Thierry Decordier, Guillaume Bijl, Dennis Tyfus, Walter Swennen en Jan De Cock. Johan Pas (b. 1963), professor, author and curator, shares in the exhibition his more than twenty years old passion for art books: "'Artists' books are more than any other artistic medium able to infiltrate into the cultural network. They are stubborn obstacles in time, simultaneously they spread out around the world, slowly but surely." Johan Pas selected for each year a title from his collection: 'This one title a year is a self-imposed restriction to keep the choice sharp and the story bright.' The story begins with Yves Klein and ends (for now) with Vaast Colson and Dennis Tyfus. In the book, Multiple/Readings, all exhibited books are extensively discussed and illustrated.
First edition, 4to, xviii, 164pp., orig. cloth, slightly marked.
12mo, xii,155pp., frontis., facsimiles, orig. cloth, d.w. The bibliography is intended to provide as complete a check-list as possible of Mrs. Sherwood's Multifarious publications in book form.
8vo., with coloured frontispiece, 11 coloured plates and 48 plates in monochrome, fore-edges very lightly dust-soiled; original decorative brown cloth, upper board and backstrip blocked in blind and lettered in black, a remarkably well-preserved copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter chafed (not affecting lettering) at head of backstrip. With advertisement front endpapers in sepia and 11pp of similar advertisements at end. 'All About Cookery' (first issued under this title in 1871) is a derivative of Isabella Beeton's final work 'The Dictionary of Cookery'. The 'Dictionary' was first published in 1865 and designed to full the gap between her classic (but highly-priced) 'Book of Household Management' and the cheaper 'Cookery'. A key feature of the work is the arrangement of its subject matter - recipes, menus, implements and so on - in alphabetical order for easy reference. It is her only work so presented and to our belief the first compilation of its kind. The Edwardian and Georgian editions are particularly comprehensive in their scope and coverage. SCARCE IN THE DUSTWRAPPER. See Driver, p.101 and our own bibliography (in progress). Cagle 563 cites the 1903 edition with fewer plates.
