A very surprising inscription to the editor-in-chief of LOpinion who first offered to publish this novel in February 1913 through Henri Massis. The offer was ultimately redacted after being rejected by the magazines other editors. Thanks to his longtime friend Jacques Rivière young Alain-Fournier managed to get a pre-first edition serialized version of this novel published in the Revue de la Nrf. In the end the small publishing house Emile-Paul agreed to issue the finished work in volume in September. The immediate success of this masterpiece of 20th-century French literature must have somewhat ruffled the feathers of Jean de Pierrefeu who wrote a bitter and ambivalent review: I would have liked Alain Fournier to stop his story at the moment of his departure for Paris. we would have been quite happy to accept that this slightly mad and fanciful tale should remain unexplained. . but he wanted to weigh down his novel which from then on turns out to be absurd the characters become puppets. the dried-up skeleton of a love story to which one is not allowed to become seriously attached. No doubt Pierrefeu wished to justify LOpinions failed offer of publication. Although in so doing he was reflecting a general lack of understanding by literary critics confused by the innovative double narrative structure of the novel. Rare inscription penned a year before the authors death in action in the first weeks of the First World War. Exceptional copy of one of the greatest French novels of the 20th-century. Il comporte bien la faute p. 133 : chapitre I au lieu de chapitre II ; la faute sera corrigée an cours de ce premier tirage sur le dernier tiers des impressions. Exemplaire n° 555 au composteur. . L'autre papier numéroté sera imprimé sur papier vert 10 ou 6 exemplaires ; 30 exemplaires supplémentaires 10 sur japon et 20 sur hollande seront imprimés en janvier 1914 - sans que cela soit entièrement documenté. Précieux exemplaire enrichi d'une importante lettre d'Alain-Fournier à son ami Georges Le Cardonnel écrite quelques mois avant la parution du Grand Meaulnes au printemps 1913 : « L'Opinion . a trouvé je crois très sincèrement mon livre bien . mais il n'a pas paru assez Jeune France assez ‘roman de l'Opinion' assez ‘enquête d'Agathon'. . Je ne regrette qu'une chose c'est que cette aventure ait retardé la publication de ce livre depuis longtemps terminé. Désormais je résisterai à toutes les tentatives de séduction. Et il paraîtra en juillet soit à la NRF soit à La Grande Revue à mon choix et en octobre en volume soit à la NRF soit chez Émile-Paul à mon choix également ». L'exemplaire sur papier vert de René Gaffé-Hayoit-Simonson contenant la lettre suivante datée de juin au même dans laquelle Alain-Fournier lui annonce la parution du Grand Meaulnes dans la Nouvelle Revue Française. Cet exemplaire contenait également la copie tapuscrite d'une lettre d'Émile-Paul à Simonson détaillant le tirage de l'édition : « Le livre a paru pour la première fois en septembre 1913 à la fin des vacances. Il y avait un tirage sur papier courant numéroté de 1 000 exemplaires et 10 exemplaires sur papier vert destinés à l'auteur. Ce roman rencontra un grand succès de presse et de critique et de tous côtés nous parvinrent des demandes d'exemplaires sur papier de choix. Au début de l'année 1914 nous fîmes tirer 10 ex. sur japon et 20. ex sur hollande qui nous furent livrés par l'imprimeur en février 1914. Ces ex. ont exactement la même présentation que les ex. publiés avant ». Cette missive est en contradiction avec la lettre envoyée par Émile-Paul à Auguste Blaizot le 6 février 1934 dans laquelle l'éditeur indique que six exemplaires - et non 10 - avaient été tirés sur papier vert dans l'exemplaire Jacques Guérin vente du 28 novembre 1990 n° 103. Par ailleurs il est établi qu'un exemplaire sur japon le n° 2 possède un envoi daté de janvier ce qui rend impossible leur livraison en février. The colour panel images are all complete. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Striking B/W illustrations throughout by John Minton who was also responsible for the wrapper artwork. The author's only book which was based on his childhood and originally published in 1928. It has twice been made into a film. One of John Minton's highlight titles and very scarce to find with the wrapper in any condition. This copy's wrapper is one of the best I have handled.
