One of 160 copies octavo size 55 pp. The thirteenth publication from The Allen Press this story by Honore de Balzac 1799-1850 was originally titled "Maitre Cornelius" and first appeared in 1831 in the "Revue de Paris"; it was published in book form in 1832. Balzac was a prolific French novelist and playwright perhaps best remembered today for "Eugénie Grandet" his first bestseller; in this famous wayward love story set in fifteenth-century France Marie de Saint-Vallier daughter of Louis XI is unhappily married and becomes entangled in an unusual love affair. <br/><br/>The book features four wood engravings by the incomparable Mallette Dean 1907-1975 painter and illustrator who worked for most of his career in San Francisco on projects such as the WPA Mural Project the murals in Coit Tower and for fifteen years illustrated books for the Grabhorn Press and other Bay-Area presses such as the Allens'. Monnier and signed by the publisher Rene Kieffer. Pochoir art was at its height in Paris in the early 20th Century and no publisher produced more of them than Rene Kieffer. One of the masters of the art form was Jean-Paul Quint 1884-1953 who used this technique in illustrating Balzac's work. The stunning pochoir are often spread out over two pages creating a "stage" for the text which is entirely in French. Custom made paper with watermark on title page and other pages with "Editions Rene Kieffer". From 1922 to 1928 La Quint and Kieffer worked together creating some of the finest books aimed at the bibliophile collector limited editions of Blaise Cendars see the Morgan copy. the Voltaire as well as the Balzac versions. The process of creating each work has been well described and today it is considered too costly both in time and materials to produce. Balzac has been acclaimed for his prose innovations which lent a somewhat mannered precision and clarity to French letters. He is also credited with the development of a French national style of prose writing. That is his emphasis on the "idiomatic elements" of the French language contributed significantly to "the development of the language on national lines" Encyclopedia Britannica 1913 p. 301. Balzac's fame can be attributed primarily to his great abilities as a letter writer and to the publication of a collection of Lettres 1634. Originally written as an eulogy of Louis XIII The Prince was published in 1631 and contains two substantial letters together fifty-six pages in length written to Cardinal Richelieu.
