1899022602Boston: Hardy Pratt and Co 1899. Limited Edition. Octavo. Limited to only 40 sets. The present set is #2. A few volumes unopened. In 40 volumes illustrated with photogravures hand-colored by Jeannniot Adrien Moreau and several others who were specially chosen by the firm Goupil & Co. The set has a total of 283 hand-colored plates 7 per volume except volume 40 which has 10. with tissue guards present. Translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley who most likely knows more about Balzac and his works than anyone in this country. He was her life's study. In the preface which was written by Balzac in 1856 was placed in volume I to give Balzac's own interpretation of his books. Balzac was an early pioneer of literary realism. He used incidents from his life and the people around him in works like Eugénie Grandet and Louis Lambert. His writings influenced several other writers including Henry James who wrote about him as did William Saroyan Marcel Proust adored him. He had been compared with Charles Dickens. An exceptionally fine set bound in 3/4 green morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers raised bands lettered and decorated in gilt top edges gilt all others uncut. No names or bookplates spines are evenly faded but still quite beautiful. A monumental work. Hardy, Pratt and Co unknown

Covers are a little worn but gold lettering and design on spines is bright and attractive; top and bottom edges of spines are rather worn; rest of covers are almost like new very minimal wear at tips of corners. Interiors are like new; appear to be unread pages are not yet cut. Unclear whether there are more volumes in this set beyond volumes 1-9 which we are offering. Limited edition of 1000 sets this being numbered 803. Each volume is 5.4"x7.9" and about 1.6" thick. Black pebbled leather on spines plus 2" of cover plus large caps on corners. Rest of cover is coars light brown cloth. Gold lettering and elaborate design on spines. Attractive mottled green and brown endpapers. Each volume has a color illustration prior to the title page. In a rather toned and slightly worn marbled slipcase. WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR BY FRANÇOIS COURBOIN signed by the artist along the lower right and 25 hand-colored prints by Courboin in the text with printed tissue guards. A Large Paper Copy. Carteret V p. 21. Spine uniformly sunned to tan as expected but the binding especially lustrous and entirely unworn; faint offset from the illustration onto the half title but very clean and fresh with immense margins and with almost no signs of use.<br/> <br/> A visual delight inside and out this is a bibliophile's copy of Balzac's slice-of-life classic luxuriously illustrated including with an original watercolor and in a beautifully decorated binding. The gently humorous tale here follows a "man of science" as he attempts to make a dinner engagement but gets distracted by the tempting booksellers along the Seine and an argument with a professional rival. The binding is part of an important French tradition: the work of the binder Cuzin who died in 1890 was so well known and so highly esteemed that he was responsible for establishing what was called the "Cuzin style." Devauchelle says that the Cuzin tradition was sustained in its finest form by his celebrated successor Emile Mercier who signed bindings from this period including the present work "Mercier successeur de Cuzin." Beyond the binding the illustrations here provide a second highlight as the engraver librarian and print historian François Courboin 1865-1926 provides a depiction of Paris and its inhabitants in the first quarter of the 19th century. The original watercolor on the half-title depicts the world-weary main character seated in an overstuffed chair in his night cap with slippered feet being served a cup of tea. Both the watercolor and the printed illustrations in the text are done with soft pleasing colors by an extremely careful hand. A. Roquette unknown

Illustrated by many different French artists including A.P. Laurens Pierre-Georges Jeanniot Georges Cain and others. All illustrations reproduced in lush tissue-guarded heliogravure plates. All 40 volumes bound in matching three-quarter crushed burgundy levant morocco over moss-green cloth boards with matching green-marbled endpapers sewn-in green velvet textile bookmark top edges gilt. Six raised and finely tooled spine compartments with gilt lettering; in the second compartment WORKS OF BALZAC followed by the individual titles in the third compartment. Spines and leather edges are rubbed and in many of the 40 volumes the front cover has neatly detached from the spine due - I would venture - to excessive dryness. The books show virtually no sign of handling are clean and have no inscriptions or bookplates. Except for the mentioned detached covers this is a Good and complete set.
