The book itself shows just a touch of shelf rubbing along the edges the gutters are evenly toned otherwise the binding is strong and tight the text is clean and unmarked and the boards remain bright and distinct. Beau tirage original d'atelier d'époque légendé au dos « Jean Cocteau Mai 1942 » par le photographe avec tampons « photo Papillon 3 passage de l'Union Inv. 46-07 Paris 7ème ». . Le Centre Pompidou conserve une autre remarquable photographie de cette même séance inventoriée sous le n° AM 2012-6112 mais datée de 1939 ; la mention manuscrite portée sur notre tirage contemporaine de l'épreuve invite très probablement à corriger cette datation. Formé par François Kollar membre de l'AEAR reporter en Espagne puis portraitiste attitré des éditions Denoël et Steel André Papillon est un photographe discret mais à la technique sûre et reconnue. Ce beau portrait livre le poète posant devant la sculpture de ferronnerie figurant un grand oiseau fantastique que l'on serait tenté de lire dans l'univers même de Cocteau comme un coq héraldique - allusion possible au Coq et l'Arlequin - dont la silhouette prolonge comme en négatif le profil même du poète.
