Bien complet du portrait en frontispice du tome I par Rigaud gravé par Tarideu et des 7 gravures de Moreau et Marillier . Légers frottements aux reliures avec petits manques de cuir aux coiffes des tomes II et IV et trois petites épidermures. Etiquette ancienne en dos du tome I. Le corps des ouvrages est en très bon état, les gravures de belle qualité. Précisons que 2 volumes complémentaires destinés au théatre italien et tirés à petit nombre complétaient l'oeuvre initialement, ils ne figurent pas ici comme dans la plupart des séries (Bibliographie Cohen). This edition reproduces the text from the original editions but without the title page. The first edition of Le Légataire universel dated 1708 and La critique du légataire also from 1708 were added at the end of volume II. The edition contains an engraved half-title a frontispiece for each play in volume I a frontispiece for Democrite and one for Les Menechmes. It appears that the one for Les folies amoureuses is missing. Le légataire universel has a frontispiece and a title vignette. According to Brunet these works appeared in 1714 with a title page dated 1708. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title labels red morocco volume labels. Head cap of volume II partly torn off. Lacks at tail of volume I. Rubbing. Corners bumped and worn. Contemporary full sheep bindings in polished mottled leather signed with a Mouillié label probably slightly later. Spine with raised bands decorated with 4 fleurons in dotted lozenges. Morocco title and volume labels in red. Decorative border on covers. Edges gilt. A crack to the upper joint of volume IV. Rubbing to headcaps joints and corners. Very handsome copy. Volume 1 is devoted to travel narratives volumes 2 to 4 to theater. Callender 1751-1821 worked circa 1771-1821 as an engraver in Boston Mass. He started as a journeyman in Paul Revere's shop. He created at least twenty-two bookplates and cut the seal for the Bank of Massachusetts in 1784. In the original French.A sammelband of seven French theatrical works the majority being comedies from popular playwrights.The first work is a 1757 edition of 'La Coquette Corrigee' by 'Delanoue' the pseudonym of Jean-Baptiste Simon Sauvé de La Noue.The second work is a very 1763 edition of 'Le Droit du Seigneur' by Voltaire published in the same year as the unauthorised first single volume edition of the five act play.The third play is Charles Simon Favart's popular comedy 'L'Anglois a Bordeaux'. A very scarce copy published in the same year as the play was first performed.The fourth comedy is a scarce 1765 early edition of Charles Simon Favart's comedy 'Isabelle et Gertrude ou Les Sylphes Supposes'. Published in the same year as the first edition but with different pagination and lacking the six sheets of music present in the first edition.The fifth work is a posthumously published 1758 edition of playwright Philippe Nericault Destouches's 'Le Philosophe Marie' which was first produced in 1927.The sixth work is a 1765 edition of Jean-Francois Regnard's 'Le Joueur' first performed in 1696.The final work is the very scarce tragic drama 'Marcellus ou Les Persecutions: Tragedie Chretienne' by Ponce Dehaye-Polet. The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work from a writer about whom little is known.With the loosely inserted bookplate of Irish philosopher Rev. Francis Hutcheson known as one of the founding fathers of the Scottish Enlightenment.A fascinating collection of French dramas and comedies. In a full calf binding.
