19509369<p>This is a nice condition early copy of "Shooting an Elephant" by GEORGE ORWELL with its original dust jacket. 1950 1st edition 7th printing stated; Harcourt Brace & World; New York. The book is a collection of 18 essays including "Some Thoughts on the Common Toad" "Reflections on Gandhi" "Lear Tolstoy and the Fool" "How the Poor Die" "A Hanging" "Books vs. Cigarettes" "Nonsense Poetry" and more. The title essay "Shooting an Elephant" recounts Orwell's time as a British colonial police officer in Burma. It details the psychological pressure of imperialism where Orwell feels forced to kill a rogue elephant to avoid appearing foolish in front of the local population despite knowing it is morally wrong.<br /><br />Condition:<br />The book is in Near Fine condition and appears unread. Clean both inside and out with only a thin stain marker strip along the top edge of the text block see photo. Clean covers and spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Some very light tanning to the pastedowns from the jacket flaps. The dust jacket is un-clipped with the price intact on the front flap; a small bit of the paper is missing at the top-right and bottom-left corners of the spine.overall the jacket is in Very Good condition.</p> Harcourt, Brace & World hardcover
