As a young man Orwell took a position in the Indian Imperial Police and was particularly struck by the race and class barriers which prevented him from knowing the Burmese community in which he served. Returning to England in 1927 he attempted to appease his guilt by immersing himself in the life of the poor and outcast of Europe. The resulting experiences became the bases for these thinly fictionalized accounts of his days living and working among the most disenfranchised and downtrodden of Europe's cultural centers.
