1946170845London: Socialist Book Centre 1946. First separate edition first impression of this critique of the concept of power worship. Orwell's short essay reflects on Burnham's thesis that technocracy would supplant capitalism - forcefully or otherwise. George Kateb has argued that Orwell's interpretation of Burnham's politics would serve as the "intellectual basis of 1984" p. 572. Notably however Orwell rejects Burnham's contention that the ruling class can effectively redefine reality at will. Orwell's article was originally published the same year as "Second Thoughts on James Burnham" in Polemic 3 a philosophical magazine. Octavo. Original red and white spotted wrappers lettered in black. Light bumping and sunning minor rusting to staples slight toning to contents: a very good copy indeed. Fenwick D.2a. 195572629Berkeley California: Berkeley Young Socialist League 1955. Wraps. Very good. Likely the first separate American printing of this essay which was first published in the May 1946 issue of Polemic. In this critical discussion Orwell born Eric Arthur Blair 1903-50 acknowledges that the general drift has "almost certainly been towards oligarchy" and "an increasing concentration of industrial and financial power" but criticizes the tendency of Burnham's "power-worship" and comments upon the failures in analysis that arise from it. As biographer Michael Shelden observed "Orwell was always at his best when he was on the attack and his Polemic essay on Burnham is a brilliant criticism of the whole concept of power worship." Preceded by publisher's remarks by James Robertson of the Berkeley Young Socialist League the influential leftist campus group. The recto of the rear wrapper includes the YSL Statement of Principles along with a mailing form with the organization's Berkeley and New York addresses. Mimeographed 2 15 p. Original mimeographed blue paper wrappers 8 ½" x 11" bound with staples. Some general toning to the wrappers with offsetting to the rear panel; else very good. Berkeley Young Socialist League unknown

194751246Vilhelm Priors Forlag 1947. Uncut in the original wrappers. Wrappers with a few nicks and a tears. 10 cm long tear to spine. Internally fine and clean.

First Danish edition of one of the most important literary works of the 20th century the satirical-political masterpiece that so magnificently reflects the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and brilliantly caricatures Stalinism. As Orwell himself put it with this work he deliberately tried "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole". Orwell "Why I Write". "Animal Farm" brilliantly portrays not only the corruption of the revolution but also how traits of human character themselves corrupt society. The greatest flaw of revolution is not the corrupt leadership on its own but also the greed indifference ignorance shortsightedness wickedness etc. that govern the individuals that make up the masses. The work was written between late 1943 and early 1944 when the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Stalin was held in highest esteem in Britain among both the people and intelligentsia. Not surprisingly it was initially rejected by both British and American publishers and the publication of it was thus delayed. When it did appear 1945 it became a great commercial success however probably not least due to the soon to follow Cold War. The work is generally considered one of the best and most influential literary productions of the 20th century. unknown

1936148358London: Victor Gollancz 1936. Frist edition of Orwell's classic social criticism of money-worship and status. Octavo original cloth. Very good in the rare original dust jacket with some restoration and flaps restored. First editions in the original jacket are rare. Owell's Keep the Aspidistra Flying centers on the story of Gordon Comstock and his romantic ambition to defy the worship of the money and status and the dismal life that results. Orwell wrote the book in 1934 and 1935 when he was living at various locations near Hampstead in London and drew on his experiences in these and the preceding few years. At the beginning of 1928 he lived in lodgings in Portobello Road from where he started his tramping expeditions sleeping rough and roaming in the poorer parts of London. The novel was adapted into a 1997 film of the same name directed by Robert Bierman and stars Richard E. Grant and Helena Bonham Carter. Victor Gollancz hardcover
