George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair 1903-1950 an English novelist essayist and critic. His works were often social commentaries arguing against totalitarianism in support of democratic socialism. The adjective 'Orwellian' describes totalitarian and authoritarian social practices and many of his neologisms such as 'Big Brother' and 'Thought Police' are in common use in the English language. This work is Orwell's final work and is a dystopian science fiction novel first published by Secker & Warburg in 1949. Its events follow Winston Smith as he dreams of rebellion in an imagined version of the year 1984 in which government surveillance and propaganda are rife during ongoing war.This is a fourth impression of the first edition complete with the dust wrapper preserved. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart a touch of fading to the spine otherwise minor shelf wear only. Dust wrapper is in two pieces with two inches of the spine remaining; the covers are a trifle rubbed with a tear to the rear cover but flaps are in very good condition. Pencil ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed Secker & Warburg hardcover

The pulp cover designed by artist Alan Harmon puts a different spin on the dystopian classic. Protagonist Winston Smith is unusually buffed-out and shares a sly glance with Julia who wears an Anti-Sex League button over a slinky uniform that appears to be anything but. Behind them stands O'Brien wearing a skin-tight leather outfit and holding what appears to be a whip. Covers is bright and beautiful. Some rubbing at the spine crease at the bottom right-hand corner of front wrap. Inside gutter cracking but still holding. This book was first published in hardback in 1949 and this is the the first Mass market paperback edition. . Very good condition. unknown

Although many worthy experts suggest that the red jacket has historically proved to be the scarcer it is our experience that the green one has proved equally difficult to acquire in recent years - worth noting that of ten jacketed first editions that appeared at auction in 2025 eight were in the red jacket. Bookplate to front pastedown and ink name to front free endpaper; jacket with expert restoration to corners and central section of spine resulting in an excellent example.
