1937173198London: Victor Gollancz Ltd 1937. A handsomely bound copy First edition of Orwell's classic study of poverty in northern England firmly established among Orwell's most powerful non-fiction works. The book was issued to members of Victor Gollancz's Left Book Club as the choice for March 1937 ensuring a large edition. Although Gollancz commissioned Orwell's study the latter half of the book - in which Orwell condemns British socialist intellectuals and their adherence to the Soviet Union - dismayed Gollancz and the Left Book Club committee. Gollancz published the book in its entirety but with his own preface taking issue with many of Orwell's claims. Octavo 211 x 133. With 16 half-tone photographic plates. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in green morocco spine lettered in gilt raised bands twin rule to turn-ins gilt blue and green patterned endpapers gilt edges. A fine copy. Fenwick A5a; Lewis p. 140. hardcover
195878873New York: Harcourt Brace and Company 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Although Orwell grew up in the relative comfort of the English middle class his socialist convictions and general sense of fairness led him to hate his country's deeply ingrained class structure. That perspective permeates this book but the most striking elements are the quotidian details of life that Orwell observes in his first-person account of the lives of coal miners and others in the poor north of England. Octavo: xxiv 264 pp. with 32 pp. of photographs. Original blue cloth binding with silver-stamped titles. Faint spot to the top edge with some light toning along the extremities of the boards. The dust jacket is moderately shelfworn with a crease to the spine and a short tear to the top of the front panel that has been mended with tape on the verso; else very good. Harcourt, Brace and Company hardcover
